The pass this guy gets is astounding.

Francis Ford Coppola gets shit on for not making good movies in decades, but at least Coppola has The Godfather 1 and 2, Apocalypse Now and The Conversation. Why doesn't Robert Rodriguez get this hate? He has a fanbase and yet his IMDb ratings are mediocre. His highest rated film was co-directed.

El Mariachi - 6.8
Desperado - 7.1
From Dusk Till Dawn - 7.2
The Faculty - 6.6
Spy Kids - 5.6
Spy Kids 2 - 5.3
Spy Kids 3 - 4.3
Once Upon a Time In Mexico 6.3
Sin City - 8.0
The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3D - 3.7
Planet Terror - 7.0
Shorts - 4.7
Machete - 6.6
Spy Kids 4 - 3.5
Machete Kills - 5.6
Sin City 2 - 6.5
Red 11 - 5.0
Alita: Battle Angel - 7.3
We Can Be Heroes - 4.7
Hypnotic - 5.5

Of his 20 films, he only has 5 movies rated a 7.0 or higher. On the flip side, he also has 5 films rated lower than a 5.0. It's amazing how making 5 good (not great) movies can mask a mostly mediocre career.

Putting his IMDb scores aside, the movies are really not that great. He has the odd cool shot, but the movies themselves aren't memorable. He's capable of making a passable movie, but if I wrote a screenplay, I'd be concerned if he was directing it.

He gets a lifetime pass for making The Faculty (1998).

reply

I think it's an average movie.

reply

Its an epic classic , I love The Faculty (1998) Holds up great. Josh H is also very good in it.

reply

I see where you're coming from.

I think a large reason he gets a pass is for resourcefulness, or his ability to do a lot with very little.

Most people probably couldn't have made a film like El Mariachi independently the way he did for so little money. At least not in the early 90's.

As an example, Tarantino originally tried to make True Romance as an independent film on his own and he and never finished making it, he abandoned it. So while Tarantino is clearly the better director overall, by far, Rodriguez can actually make a picture with very little, something most people, including Tarantino, might not be able to do.

I think that's why he gets a pass.

That being said, when it comes to studio backed films with bigger budgets, I agree the best he can do is "pretty good"- something like Alita.

But he's still one of my favorite directors for his early work like Mariachi, Desperado, and Dusk Till Dawn.

I quite like El Mariachi. I respect it for being an entertaining action movie with an insanely low budget. I just feel that he relies on cool shots and not much else. I get that he's one of those experimental directors who likes to attempt many things, but at some point the movies have to be good. I used to be a huge fan of Steven Soderbergh but got sick of him for that reason. Just lame film after lame film.

reply

He's a decent director. We Can Be Heroes, Spy Kids and The Faculty are underrated.

reply

Spy Kids is okay if you want mindless fun.

reply

All 3 movies are commercially successful films. You get passes not because you get high praises but your movies make money, that is what counts.

reply

Did you see Planet Terror? It's a god damn masterpiece!

Beside the great Planet Terror, yes, most his movies are either mediocre or terrible.

reply

I thought it was okay. Nothing great.

reply

Masterpiece LMAO

If it was an unknown nobody who made it it would get 0 attention and at best 3 rating.

Planet Terror really isn't good.

WHat is good is the presentation of the grindhouse and those shirt films/trailers as such.

I have seen better zombie movies produced on the likes of scifi channel for a budget half of this as well.

The picture was about stroking egos you can tell this by the commentary.

NO...HE MAKES AWESOME FILMS FOR HIS FANS...WE ENJOY HIS WORK...ADD TO THAT THE FACT THAT HE WRITES...DIRECTS...SHOOTS...EDITS...SCORES...ETC ALL HIS FILMS AT HIS STUDIO ON HIS OWN PROPERTY...THE DUDE IS AWESOME.

This guy plays guitar, harmonica, drums and the washboard simultaneously.

That doesn't mean it's good.

reply

NO...IT DOESN'T...BUT RODRIGUEZ IS.

reply

He's below average.

reply

I AM SORRY TO HEAR THAT YOU CHILDLIKE AND UNINTELLIGENT OPINIONS DO NOT MATCH MINE.

reply

His movies are generally good quality, which probably has a lot to do with budget. But yeah this reflects what I've always thought about his films, which is that they never quite hit the mark they're aiming for, so they're always just above if not dead on average. For example, Alita would've been a better film imo if he'd just used the actresses's real faces - that alone would've boosted the film's watch-ability. But he has this habit with all the films I've seen of just missing the mark in some major way that makes them not interesting to re-watch.

reply

I agree that his films are not that rewatchable. They get worse the second viewing. He makes movies that are good enough to be passable, but I don't think he's a legend or even a good director. If you want to watch a film that's a 6/10, he's your guy.

reply

I guess there's some skill in making consistently passable films, but yeah def not a legend in my book. I personally wouldn't be flattered that my talent as a director is "not making garbage" - especially when even garbage films are more fun to revisit.

reply

Rodriguez and Coppola are different directors with different scopes. People like Rodriguez because he focuses on whats fun for his Audience. Coppola tends to focus on drama and he's gotten plenty of awards for his work.

My problem with Coppola is that his Dracula is shot well but flows wierd. My problem with Rodriguez is that he's big on fan service which doesn't age well.

Both are good directors regardless

reply

Don't get me started with Dracula. I know most people like it, but I think it's awful.

reply

I enjoyed his barebones Guerrilla style filmmaking in the past. Not so much anymore. I hate his Spy kids & Adventure pics.
If Hypnotic was made in 1996 we would still be talking about it, in 2023 it falls very flat.

reply

I saw Hypnotic a month ago and a few days ago I had forgotten I saw it.
