He is absolutely right. Why the hell should he have to put up with people trespassing, urinating, defecating, using drugs, and being drunk on and near his property? He has no obligation to tolerate bums invading his privacy. This nonsense has ruined Venice and other large sections of L.A., as well as San Francisco.
I'll donate gift cards as often as I can, and if you're holding a sign then I will absolutely give you cash, at least $1 if I have it, because I know how degrading that can be.
If I'm convinced they're in actual need, I'll give them something but most of them are professional sign holders who either don't want to better themselves or are outright scammers. If you're smoking, I will NOT pay for your cigarettes. If there's evidence of drugs and/or alcohol, I will NOT fund your addiction. If you're wearing $100.00 Nikes, you can provide for yourself (as evidenced). If you're able bodied and have been on the same street corner for months with your faded sign, you're just a leech. I don't know anyone who has found a job, panhandling. I believe in a hand UP, not a hand OUT.
How has he helped? By paying way more than the average person in taxes. Naturally he’s frustrated that the money he puts in is wasted by woke politicians who have let California’s cities become unlivable in.
Doesn't constantly making these snarky pointless comments make for a rather pointless life? I could understand it if you are a troll program, but a human should aspire to more.
The majority of people on this site are far right "Alf garnett"s or "Archie Bunker"s, and anything not fitting in - which is most things - is labelled "leftist woke shit"
Great. Let the satanic oppressors leave California. It will put the money and positions into the hands of the righteous. May God's will be done in earth as it is in heaven.
Honey, that's all very nice, but it's not enough to get people off the street and you know it. What is needed to actually get people off the streets and into homes is the creation of large-scale low-income housing, a mass expansion of mental health and drug treatment services, employers willing to hire people who don't have a fix address, and other mass-scale interventions that will need to be undertaken by governments more than individuals.
In the meantime, in a real world where cities don't have enough low-income housing to house all the people with low incomes, the unhoused don't have carte blanche to tresspass, harass people, or do anything else that's illegal. The housed still have rights.
Oh, I've got my Representative's number on speed dial, but somehow in spite of my efforts, millions of units of low-income housing have failed to appear. Same for you, I presume.
And even if the homeless suffer illegal treatment, that does NOT give them the right to commit illegal acts themselves, and that includes sleeping or shitting on Paul Hogan's lawn if he denies them permission to do so. Hogan is in the right here, and all the homeless advocates and activists need to put their energy into bringing low-income housing and mental health services into being, not complaining about him.
No. This is NOT Hogan's fault, stop pointing the finger at him, or at other private citizens, and point it where it belongs. Point it at local, state, and national government who refuse to do squat about housing costs or to provide necessary health services for people who have no medical insurance, point it at real estate developers who've replaced low-income housing with high-income housing, etc.
Hogan has every right to complain if people are trespassing on his property and doing other things to diminish his quality of life, and that goes whether he advocates on behalf of the homeless or not.
No, it's not about fault. It's about humanitarianism and compassion and qualities that apparently only a few in the world own. Oppressors and greedy people shouldn't be admired.
Hogan isn't an oppressor, and nothing he's done here implies that he's greedy!
And yes, in this thread you ARE acting like Hogan and everyone here who doesn't share all of your views is at fault, by saying "What are YOU doing" you are inferring that you blame whoever it is that you're talking to or about for the homeless problem, which is bullshit.
If you ever want people to listen to you or to take your activism seriously, you need to learn how to engage with people in a way that isn't this off-putting. FYI you're coming off as a real snot, and FYI yes I know that by this point I'm coming off as a real bitch. That's because I actually am a real bitch, and you're pissing me off.
Homeless people can't rise up or overcome because of how they're treated by society. Yes, unfortunately for homeless people, there are a lot of real bitches in society.
Throughout history--and in every society since the beginning of time--there's always been a so-called "indigent/vagrant" class. These are people who have dropped out of society due to mental illness, substance abuse or vagrancy (begging, grifting, freeloading, criminality, etc.). They're not homeless because they're not being "helped." They don't want to be or can't be helped--and a large majority of them are incredibly destructive, invasive or violent. It's why people like Paul Hogan don't want them in their backyard. They're not "salts of the earth" straight out of Les Miz or a Dickens novel. Believe me.
And if you don't believe me, go right ahead, strike up a friendship with one of these people and offer them to stay in your house to "help" them out. You will learn the lesson the hard way what happens when you naively assume that they're just people down on their luck. A British woman's husband and kid was murdered after the guy she took in to help out went on a stabbing spree. Three people were killed in Queens, NY were killed after a guy the homeowner took in set the house on fire in revenge for being asked to move out.
In my case, a woman who we knew through a mutual friend simply decided that my elderly, sick parents were going to take care of her like she was their daughter. Mind you, she was a woman in her 60s and a retiree. But it didn't matter. She "adopted" my parents and then expected them to cook and clean for her. She was so crazy that after my father kicked her out, she would call them a half a dozen times a week, as if they were her parents. That's how mental these homeless people are. But like I said, you're free to "take in" these poor, put upon souls since your heart bleeds so much for them.
Most homeless people are garbage and stains on society. Only a small percentage are in that situation due to misfortune. Most are there by bad choices. Fuck homeless people, they are ruining our cities because the liberal scum running those cities have given incentives for being homeless.
There's no such thing as a civilian being able to "help the homeless."
The people we call "homeless" are the mentally ill and so-called "vagrant class" (people dropping out of society) who used to be put in mental hospitals around the country for almost a century or lived in what used to be called "skid rows" (areas of cities in which derelict and vagrants lived). For example, in NYC, the "homeless" all more or less moved to an area here called "The Bowery," where there were missions, SROs, etc. to feed and house them on the cheap.
That all changed until stupid civil libertarians (oh, how I hate them), ivory tower idealists and vapid middle class white hipsters like Ken Kesey started romanticizing institutionalization as a culture war between "free spirits" and "conformist society." They raved that putting away vagrants and unstable people was a violation of their civil rights. They also peddled the lie that by removing skid rows and mental hospitals, druggies and mentally ill would magically be healed if they were forced to live among regular people. Not surprisingly, Rightwingers like Ronald Reagan jumped on this deinstitutionalization bandwagon, because it meant slashing the budget for people like this.
Bit by bit, the hospitals were deinstitutionalized and stuff like SROs banned or scrapped, resulting in working class, middle class and even upper class neighborhoods forced to act as dumping grounds for people who used to be in America's vast mental hospital network or lived in skid rows.
I emphasize, they can't be "helped" with by getting celebs or just plain regular people donating to or pushing for more homeless shelters. They are too mentally ill, strung out and in some cases violent to live in shelters. They need to be forced back into some kind of "network" like in the past (could be combination mental health/rehab), as well as segregated by way of skid rows, where they can rent SROs, be helped by missions, etc.
Thank you. I hope I got through to some people, but I have a feeling I'm gonna get slammed by contrarians screaming that homeless people are salts of the earth and I'm just demonizing them.
Those are actually the minority. The ones who for example lost their homes in the housing bubble of 2008. For the most part they were functioning human beings. They became houseless, not necessarily homeless. And weren’t a bother to others, they were trying to get back up on their feet.
I don't care you if you're not taking my word because I didn't write my post for you. I wrote it to keep others from being misinformed by you.
That's the great thing about the internet. A person like you can post a lot of misinformed, emotive dribble to try to persuade people to your point of view. Another person--who has decades-long experience with the topic at hand--can counter your misinformation with actual information. Then people reading the thread can decide for themselves who is right--1) the flake that can just shoot back with the immaturity and petulance of a 12 year old Tumblr user 2) the person that can explain the decades-long political, cultural and social trends that led to a certain problem exploding, and what can be done about it.
So, I'm going to try this for the last time. We never had a homeless problem. We had an indigent problem. The indigents used to be housed in a vast mental health network across the country or would live in so-called "skid rows", where there were things like SROs, missions, food kitchens, rehab centers, etc. And then a bunch of do-gooder hipster flakes, civil libertarians and Ronald Reagan decided to cut them loose for cynical purposes, and the indigent class became the "homeless crisis."
BTW, this "cutting loose" is also why the United States has the most jailed people per capita out of every country in the world. A large part of people in the prison system are also mentally ill and would've been institutionalized in the past. But they don't get institutionalized, wind up out on the streets as druggies or vagrants (causing disturbances with their behavior, engaging in things like public indecency, etc.) and then end up in prison.
Well, it's time to put you money where your mouth is. Volunteer at habitat for humanity, Dorothy Day, Salvation Army, etc... spend some time in a youth group digging wells for impoverished communities. States already pour millions into programs for these people. Go out and guide these people to the programs.
I did this in my teens and twenties. I donate to non-government programs for these people.
I can assure you that your tune will change if you step up to the challenge. If you don't, you don't actually care and want to virtue signal.
Bonus challenge: provide security for low income housing. Companies like G4S will set you right up.
Really? That's the best you got? First, dont ignore 501C3 tax free entities sponsored and funded through varying state programs. Churches, non-profits, and local unions do a lot of fundraising for the poor.
You just need to engage. My challenge extends to you. If you don't volunteer, you don't care about the poor.
No, you're honestly a real butthole and I'm so saddened that homeless people have to contend with heartless people.
The last time I volunteered for the homeless was on Tuesday. And the time before that was Monday. I'm pretty involved every week and I've been consistent with it for years.
Lol. If that's what you think, then be the solution. That's been the whole point I've made. But, hey, you can't take that. You just call everyone evil and a butthole. Because they're not so high and mighty as you.
Just like the pharisees making a show of faith while not actually having any.
Listen kiddo, jesus instructed his followers to act, not wait for others to act. He didn't sit there and tell his followers to create a political party. He told them to love thy neighbor as thyself, to go and sin no more, and to take up their own cross. If you actually care as about the homeless, then be the solution and stop assuming that your passion is the responsibility of others.
That's that whole, "do not judge lest ye be judged."
Considering you did not know about the homeless programs in our country and the actual efforts to help the poor, it's quite obvious that you are either a poser, ignorant, or both. In the end, you obviously have a real ego which is unbecoming of a Christian. We are to do what is good and seek no glory for following in His footsteps. Your post is exactly the opposite of that.
Lol, if there's a Catholic Church, there's a homeless program. Evangelicals, Baptists, Lutherans, and all the denominations help in their own ways. BTW, you're complaining about homeless programs, Paul Hogan lives in one of the friendliest and most accommodating states for the homeless in the USA. They spend far more than any state on homeless programs. Call me a demonic butthole insensitive all you like. You're still wrong and lazy.
Don't worry, we all have a judgment coming and very few will actually go directly to heaven. Remember, it is easier that s c as mel should pass through the eye of as needle.
Every city has one already. Start your search by looking at churches. Now, if you don't accept my challenge, you're just a virtue signaling troll who has no interest in actually helping the poor.
You mean people who actually volunteer and help them? Okay Tabbypants
Kiddo, its obvious you don't care. Your just accusing others of being what you are: a person who doesn't actually care.
You get angry that Paul Hogan doesn't solve a problem you "feel" strongly about. Well, it's not his responsibility to make you feel good. Its in you to do what you FEEL is right. So, if you really care, go ahead and start acting. Trust me, you'll be glad you did. You'll also be less annoying.
Says the person pointing out the splinter in other people's yes while ignoring the plank in her own.
That rich.
We had families who took in the poor in my hometown and got food donations to help out. There are people who do that everywhere. I've taken in three myself.
Guess what, they're not all on the records. Are you seriously this obtuse or just avoiding the responsibility to do the real work.
Face it, you're a poser. You want everyone else to do the hard work for you so you can live in a little happy bubble. You couldn't handle the real work of clothing, feeding, and helping others. Christ always told his followers to do the actions of love, not legislate it and force others.
By all means, keep advertising the type of human being you are. Let the people pity the homeless. Talk about planks and accusations. Can't you be a better person than that?
Kiddo, you accuse me all you like. You're just upset that you're not getting all the positive attention you hoped for when you promoted how wonderful and saintly you were while calling others buttholes, insensitive, demonic, and horrible.
I just called you lazy and in par with the pharisees.
Whatever you say. It's going to be sad when you go to college and lose your faith. People with your perspective fall hard and become like Katy Perry. Too bad.
If she sold her soul to satan then she wouldn't be breathing to tell about it - it would have caused both spiritual and physical death. Obviously, satan is a liar and she needs to read LOTR.
I'll make it clear enough that even a liberal can understand, because it's obvious that YOU don't know what hypocrisy means. If you aren't willing to offer what you expect of others, you're a hypocrite. Don't expect Paul, or anyone, including citizens who collaboratively own public property, to allow bums to sleep on their property, if you aren't willing to yourself.
