Sofia Coppola Says She Has to Fight for a "Tiny Fraction" of the Massive Budget Male Directors Get

Sofia Coppola is getting candid about making films on low budgets because, as a woman director, she doesn’t tend to get the massive budgets her male counterparts do.

She had to get creative with the Priscilla Presley biopic, because of its relatively low budget of $20 million.

“I just see all these men getting hundreds of millions of dollars, and then I’m fighting for a tiny fraction of that. I think it’s just left over from the way the culture of that business is. It’s frustrating, but I’m always fighting to get it, and I’m just happy to get to make my movies independently and find people that believe in them.”

She admitted it does have an upside: She doesn’t have to deal with a lot of feedback from higher-ups because they don’t have as much invested in her projects.

“There’s a challenge and a freedom in making things small because if you have a big budget, you have a lot of input from studio executives, and I would never be able to make a movie like that. So, I have that freedom, and then you have to be really crafty, and it was really hard, but I had the best team.”

Oh please. Her biggest film was an indie from 20 years ago and made $44M. Not saying I didn't like it or she sucks or anything; just show me a male director *with a similar resume* who gets "massively bigger budgets."

I'm not hearing any similar complaints from Betty Thomas, Patty Jenkins, Kathryn Bigelow or any other successful female directors (whose fathers aren't Hollywood legends, btw...)

reply

Totally agreed. It's not about male or female - it's about the color green. If you are a woman, and you make a movie that makes a ton of money - you'll have no problem getting financing for new films. If you are woman, and your movies never make money (like Sofia), then you are going to have a real hard time getting financing. Male directors are in the exact same boat.

Perhaps I spoke too soon, I think Sofia did have one hit that made some money - "Lost in Translation". Which, incidentally, one thought was extremely overrated.

reply

Yeah, Lost in Translation was the indie film that was her peak twenty years ago.

reply

Is she stupid or what? Her father, the legend, had hard time to get money for Apocalypse Now and Megalopolis, he had to put his own money to make the movies!

Even with his reputation, he can't get the money he want, what make she think she can get the money?

reply

I can't speak to her intelligence, but my guess is she's fallen for the myth that "women make less than men," just forgetting the "for the same work" clause.

reply

That's because she's not very good at her job.

reply

Oh look, an agenda-driven, feminist website pushing agenda-driven, feminist garbage. Coppola doesn't have a track record of making big money, and so she doesn't get big budgets. The entitlement of these narcissistic women is staggering.

reply

Woe is me.

She only has a Hollywood career because of family connections.

reply

"Coppola" that name sounds familiar. 😃

Can't she get her Daddy to pull some strings? A girl can't survive on a low budget. She might have to start clipping coupons just to save a few bucks. Lol

I hate listening to millionaires complain about money. It's so tacky.

reply

I think the Barbie director of the Eternals director didn't get trouble financing those movies.

Obviously indie movies, with niche subjects and targeted at niche audience is always going to get low investment.

I assume her skill as a director will make back those big budgets she needs and a nice profit as well. Based on that, I'm sure her father would be glad to put up 100M for her next project.

reply

Being part of the Coppola family must have helped though.
