Remembering the great Carrie Fisher

Stumbled on to this video during a recent rabbit hole dive into YouTube:

It made me miss her so much. Such a fierce wit and intellect, she was truly one of a kind. The world is a poorer place without her intelligence, warmth and humour.

It’s only about 20 minutes long and I’d recommend it to any fan of Fishers or those who may be unaware of what a gem she was.

RIP Carrie. May the force always be with you ❤️

Terrific writer too. I read her books.

She had a great sense of humor too. I saw her on The Tonight Show talking about her first book, Postcards from the Edge, which had been made into a movie.

She said that her grandmother wondered how “such a lousy book was made into a good movie.”😁

RIP Carrie, you were beautiful, especially as Princess Leia.

What’s your favourite book of hers? For me it’s a toss up between Postcards From The Edge and Delusions of Grandma.

I really want to read The Princess Diarist memoir too, heard it’s fantastic. Good reminder to track down a copy 👍

reply

Definitely Postcards from the Edge. It was so funny.

reply

Nice. I think Carrie’s grandmother was wrong, the book is every bit the equal of the movie, although it’s a funny self-effacing story for her to tell!

The movie is one of my favourites though. Partially for the pitch-perfect performances from Streep and MacLaine, partially for Mike Nichols’ excellent direction, but mostly for Carrie’s brilliant screenplay. It was a smart move to get her to adapt her own novel for the movie, I don’t think anyone else could have captured the magic of the book as well.

reply

Oh, I agree. Grandma was definitely wrong! The book was a great read.

I enjoyed the movie too, except for the casting. Yes, Streep and MacLaine are bona fide Hollywood super stars. But I can’t imagine two women who look LESS like mother and daughter!

Like a lot of people, I tend to “cast” the roles of the actors who could be in a movie version of the book I am reading.
I pictured the actress Lee Grant and her daughter Dinah Manoff in the film. For one thing, they look like mother and daughter. Also Dinah has a bit of a resemblance to Carrie Fisher and they were the same age.

I thought Meryl Streep was too old for the role. But she was very famous and got a lot of the plum roles.

But Hollywood didn’t call and ask my opinion😁
