I don't know about that; Schindlers list, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones 1-3, Hook, Saving Private Ryan are all Great movies.

He has also done quite a few solid movies such a Minority Report, Catch Me if you can, The Terminal.

But he has also done quite a few really bad movies. such as indiana jones 4, War of the worlds, Munich

so I agree that he is a bit overrated but he has certainly done more great movies than just ET, which I don't even like actually.

Spielberg is a great entertainment director, and revolutionized action scenes by getting right in there with the action & actors rather than standing at a remove - as the late film critic Pauline Kael put it, “I don’t think he’s ever seen a Proscenium in his life, because he doesn’t direct like he’s watching from the audience”).

Yes, directors were doing that long before he came on the scene, but until Spielberg nobody did it as constantly or as well…

His Kryptonite, sadly, is that he not only directs like an entertainer, he thinks like one, too. If all he was doing were adventures or thrillers like Hitchcock did, he’s be fine - but ever since the mid-Eighties he’s shown a desire to be considered a “Serious” director, and his attempts at that are among his weakest work. Even his successful “Serious” films mainly work because he brings his entertainer’s instincts to them - Schindler’s List, to mention his Oscar-winning movie, is about The Holocaust through the eyes of a heroic Christian industrialist who risks everything to save as many Jews sentenced to die as he can, and Saving Private Ryan, for all its powerful opening on Omaha Beach, is fundamentally about a bunch of guys going to find one person and send him home because he’s the only surviving son of his large family. The fact that both are “True Stories” doesn’t take away from the fact they’re all ultimately about Good People Doing Uplifting Things in the face of Evil and Horror.

You can never take that away from him.

Except for maybe "Jaws" all the rest of his movies have elements of being over-sentimental and sappy.

I hate ET. Jaws is good, Jurassic Park is incredibly entertaining. Not a fan of the rest of his work.

He is overrated, but I like that he takes big swings. When it works, it really works.
