I took it as meaning that there would be outcry from the LGBTQDSLDSLXYZ+ sections of society that the part didn't go to an actual homosexual. And I think Tom is correct. Don't think he's saying it should be that way just that they wouldn't get away with it in the modern era.

He’s 100% correct. Straight men can not play gay men in movies. Its, as he says and i quote, “not authentic.”
I’m also tired of innocent people who’ve never been arrested before playing murderers and rapists.
I want to start seeing these people have a chance to shine too. Its long passed time that they stopped being discriminated against. We need to start casting real murderers.

Surely the point of being an actor is to challenge yourself and play roles and characters that are different from yourself, to challenge yourself?

The people who maintain only gay actors should play gay roles for example, isn't the actor going to be typecast in those roles?

I think many people fundamentally don't understand the whole profession of acting.
