remember reading that way back in 06/07 when he first got into trouble but she's been interviewed recently and brought it up again so this new generation can go nuts on twitter etc (which obviously wasnt around back in 06/07)
What I don't understand is why Jake Tapper is tweeting this. Instead of moving forward and evolving, we are just outing people for past behavior (true or not).
Not unless it's something new. I know going after people for things they said 10, 20, 30 years ago is cool, but he's already been blacklisted and came back.
I know.. this was actually part of his 1st (pre Social media) DUI cancellation in 2006/07 when WR came forward to say what he allegedly said to her and her gay friend at a party.. but to sjw millennials who were about 5y old back in 2006 its all new
It don't matter anymore. Mel's a fossil. They shut down the final arc of his mainstream acting career, that's the last blood they'll be squeezing from that stone. He's gonna kick around and make indie films and maybe one day serve up another directing triumph that can't be ignored. But nobody cares about old timers in Hollywood. It's not interesting.
you right- even without the whole 2006 thing Mel is pretty much over now as are all the leading men from the 80s/90s like Costner, Stallone, Arnold, Bruce, Travolta, Cage even HFord - they had their 30+years at the top earning the $20m paydays for playing random cops, criminals, soldiers etc as well as their occasional big franchise stuff and now they only really get hired to either headline or support the new cast in reboots/belated sequels to their big franchises (of course Mel missed out on MadMax4 and LW5 never looks like its gonna happen: both due to being cancelled in 2006 which put a premature end to his mainstream acting/directing career) or if they do a cameo in a superhero movie which dominate theatres now - otherwise its Expendables movies and stdvd/stream stuff for their middle aged 80s/90s fans: million a day/10mins screen time spread throughout like Bruce now specializes in (used to be just Dolph/JCVD/Seagal when their cinema releases dried up back in the late 90s/00s but now you often see the big A listers doing them like Kev, Bruce, Cage, Travolta..and now even Mel...hell if Cruise didnt have M:I and his outer space movie he might be doing so too).
Costner's not over. He's actually having a career resurgence. After making several films no one cared about, he was the central character in the well-received Hatfields & McCoys mini-series on History, then was Superman's dad, and then had a sizable role in Hidden Figures, and he made The Highwaymen for Netflix, and now he's the lead on one of the most popular shows on cable (Yellowstone). His career's in a great place.
While Yellowstone shifts point of view between several different characters, make no mistake, it's Costner's show. He was also the lead in The Highwaymen. But some of his other roles have been supporting, yes.
I agree about Gibson though. He does his own thing and has found a way to be successful doing it. I think the windfall from The Passion helped a lot. That made him a major player on the independent scene and he also had secured strong friendships with important people in the industry (Jodie Foster, Robert Downey Jr, Vince Vaughn, etc), which meant that there were always people willing to work with him.
I don't like Gibson one bit, but I do have to express some grudging admiration for the way he's handled his career. He's done things his own way and found an audience, he's done things on his own terms and has been successful at it. So successful that he doesn't even need to keep his looks! For an actor, nothing shows more self-confidence than aging badly and not giving a shit!
I think Hollywood had sort of grudgingly been thinking about letting him ease back into the fold, but he's just been set back another decade there.
I've always liked Winona, but this is a big turn off. She's dredging up some shit that supposedly happened 25 years ago? Considering she knows something about Hollywood alienation due to the shoplifting thing, it would seem that she would not want to go down this road.
Even if Mel said it, he was probably joking. It's perhaps a joke in bad taste, but often times jokes are.
