Do people...

...really rate him as a good actor?

I've never saw the appeal?
He hit (whatever) peak around 'This Boy's Life' and everytime I see him (despite media hyperbole) I just see some scowling (triangular-faced) tween, with performances blessed with all the intensity of some teen being told to "tidy his room"

Yet, the media machine (alongside bought-oscars, nominations, liikewise reviews) and people proclaim him a good (if not great) actor (?)

Do cinemagoers really look forward to his movies?

reply

Yes. He is one of my favorite actors. I use to despise him until Gangs of New York. At that point I became a fan.

reply

Fair play to you (I'm neither here to convert, nor be converted)

I'm still struggling to think what was so great about 'Gangs Of New York' (or his performance) but more power to you for liking it.

Here's a question though:
What was so different from his performance in *that* movie....than those that came earlier?

reply

He didnt seem like a kid anymore. Before he had the squeaky voice and floppy hair...

reply

I hated him in Gangs of New York but I too hated him until Catch Me if You Can. Also The Aviator.

reply

Big fan, but i've never thought of him as a good actor. Which is kind of what I think about Tom Cruise too. He's very good at being "intense" on screen. But he ain't no Gary Oldman or anything. He's a movie star. I like movie stars. I don't need them to be good actors.

reply

He had better acting roles when he was younger. Really thought he was good in The Basketball Diaries, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, and The Beach.

Still think he’s solid.

reply

He was excellent in Blood Diamond.

reply

He’s typical of todays low-testosterone males with small hands. Compare him to Scorsese’s previous muse - De Niro, that guy is a man.

That said, DiCaprio is a decent actor, and he is exceptional in Shutter Island.

He just seems like he’s pushing too hard and lacks any natural charisma. Brad Pitt effortlessly outshone him in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

reply

De Niro is a candy-ass, lady boy.

reply

Never seemed all that good to me

reply

He’s made some great films. But his range is limited. He often recycles his mannerisms and style. When I watching Inception, for example, I would sometimes feel I watching Teddy from Shutter Island; then in the next moment; I’d feel like I were watching Billy Costigan from The Departed; and the next moment, I’d feel I were watching his character from Revolutionary Road etc.

Sometimes, his acting can be cringe too

reply

He's a nothingburger, imo. But I will say that his portrayal of the retarded boy Arnie Grape in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" was sheer genius.
