Why are people fascinated by this trial and so invested in Depp winning?

To me, Depp and Heard just seem like stereotypes: a pair of wealthy Hollywood narcissists in an ugly, toxic relationship. It isn't very interesting.

What has been interesting is observing how fascinated people on social media are with this case, and how one-sided the support is towards Depp. Heard doesn't strike me as a stable or nice person, either, but Depp is a well-documented alcoholic and drug user with anger management problems, and has a crazy amount of money and enablers surrounding him. Yet he gets the lion-share of the public sympathy. Look at some of the comments on the MovieChat forums about Heard - they are incredibly nasty.

I get the feeling that a lot of the ill-will towards Heard is inevitable backlash / fatigue from #METOO. I'm also intrigued by the theory that public sentiment is being deliberately manipulated on social media and people are just following whatever they see in their feed: https://www.rollingstone.com/movies/movie-features/johnny-depp-amber-heard-fan-war-online-social-bots-1345208/

I am for johnny clearing his name but the people online are 100 percent biased in these voting polls.

I agree with everything stated in the OP and find the one-sidedness disturbing. Heard is by no means innocent, but neither is Depp. He wasn't just a victim, he played at least some part in the abuse. Yet so much of the court footage and accompanying media is overwhelmingly leaning into the narrative that Depp is the charming main character and Heard is the unstable villain that the entire thing seems almost scripted, like an old telenovela.

What bothers me is how, on the surface, people are pretending this case will offer all abused men some long-awaited justice for the abuse they've suffered at the hands of women, despite this case having nothing at all to do with all abused men - all while ignoring the fact that both parties were violent towards each other. Almost like it's signalling that it's mens' turn to call out women, even though this case does not represent this idea in the slightest. That's just the excuse. Underneath this thin veil of support is almost a sense of permission to humiliate Heard in the court of public opinion because she dared belittle a powerful and wealthy older man. Because that's what people really seem to be mad about - that this lowly serf of an actor have the audacity to go up against a well known powerhouse like Depp and besmirch his "good" name, as though he didn't participate in the besmirching through his own actions.

I know literally pretty much nothing about any of this. The only thing I know is (well I believe its true) Heard and Depp were married at one time. They may still be married, I don't have a clue. So, to answer the OP's question - I don't have a clue on that one either.

I think it's the imbalance of justice for me. Yes. NOTH are ridiculous and abusive to each other. I am not going to sit here an say Johnny Depp is 100% innocent. He always came off like a cocky prick. Loved his movies; as a person.... not a fan. That being said, when this all happened and Amber started doing the abuse claims and causing Johnny to lose roles, specifically Jack Sparrow, only for it to be revealed through recordings she was JUST as bad, if not worse than he was, it pissed me off that she got to keep all her roles and reputation while he could have potentially lost everything.

This trial is a train wreck showing both sides of the marriage. His faults AND hers. It shows the bias of media and the population that they would cancel one person without all the facts. I want Johnny to win just to get his reputation back and to stick it to a woman who tried to play a victim card when she was not a victim. Either both escape unscathed or both go down. But it's not right Johnny goes down and loses his career because he's a man while she gets to keep her livelihood. Even if Johnny doesn't get a cent from this trial, at least all the info is out there for all to see. BOTH were abusive and BOTH must face the consequences (or none at all).
