Who is this generation's Tom?
No one.
shareAlec Baldwin
shareThere are no movie stars in general.
No this generation's Brad Pitt. Depp. Stallone. Julia Robets, Clooney etc
Unfortunately, maybe someone like The Rock.
shareI enjoy the John Cena and Dwayne Johnson sorts, they make fun, light action comedies and do that well.
Maybe Pattinson or Bill Skarsgard?
I like Pats and Skars, but I think they're tiers below. Cena and Johnson lack good acting capabilities.
shareI’m going to sound like a sixteen year old girl but I think Pattinson has big star power.
It is hard to argue against Tom’s enormous screen charisma. He seems a bit flaky in real life but who cares, he is a legend for sure.
Mark Wahlberg?
I thought that the likes of Garrett Hedlund, Jeremy Renner, Sam Worthington, Taylor Kitsch and Thomas Jane would all go on to be the next Tom Cruise, but the movie public weren't into them that much.
Wahlberg is kind of a terrible actor and doesn't do his own stunts.
shareI guess so. I find him more of an ‘Everyman’ actor while Cruise has much broader appeal.
shareA terrible actor doesn't get a chance to work with Martin Scorsese and receive an Oscar nomination.
shareOne off performance. He was also nominated for 3 Razzies.
shareTom Cruise was nominated for 7 Razzies, you must think he's a terrible actor too, right?
shareOnly 3 of them were from actual acting and one of them was during his couch jumping year where everyone was making fun of him. He also has 3 Oscar nominations and has worked with Kubrick, Scorsese, Spielberg, Oliver Stone, Paul Thomas Anderson, Ridley Scott and Coppola.
shareExactly, thank you for proving my point. They're not terrible actors. Of course, Tom Cruise is by far the better actor out of the two and he's still the #1 movie star on the planet. TC is in a league of his own, this guy performs most (if not all) of his own stunts in his action movies. No one can replace him.
shareThe industry has changed.
I used to think Matt Damon was someone who could reach something close to what Tom Cruise has built for himself, but that didn't end up working out. Damon was on a roll with the Bourne series, but overall he doesn't have the knack for picking surefire winners for roles like Cruise. Although, to be fair, Cruise is in a class all by himself with picking roles that succeed, he's also the co-producer most of the time now.
It's not easy to sit here and look at younger actors and predict which ones are going to hit the jackpot. Maybe the industry doesn't have the same variables and situations available for that kind of mega superstar powerhouse to blossom. Actors make a lot of money, but can they gain very much power? Probably not like Cruise has enjoyed, he's kind of grandfathered in.
Matt Damon could be if he did more action roles. I think he's a pretty solid actor in his dramas and convincing in the few action movies he's done. Tom, however, is a legitimate movie star. He has the look, he can do the action, he's been in great movies, he can sell a movie ticket and he's still doing it in his 60s.
shareGood post!
Even his name ‘Cruise’ is like a brand now. He’s gone beyond movie star, very much in his own realm.
I agree. I don't think anyone has reached his level of fame and success yet.
