I sometimes have if not "nightmares" then fairly bad dreams in life.

What could be done to avoid it, thanks, and its usually silly things like when 30 years ago I used to dream I had 6 fingers instead of 5 or see talking animals and the lot or even when I am on the run from a group of outlaws trying to put me down and I can't call the police etc.

Thanks, you, and let's avoid any too "gritty" details including stuff like over the top monsters and ghosts etc.

Dreams can be a reflection of something going on in your subconscious. Talking about them with either a therapist or maybe even just a friend might help you purge those thoughts from your mind. Does everything end up okay at the end of the dream or do you wake up before the problem is solved?

Nightmares are usually representations of fears you have. Try to identify and address those fears.

I'm someone whose diet can greatly contribute to their bad dreams. Drinking coffee, heavy fatty meals and eating too soon before bed time can be a big contributor, and not enough drinking water. But if it's a mental thing, you need to stop repressing your emotions and let your weird, chaotic side out more while you're awake - then your dreams might balance that out by making your dreams calm and uneventful.
