What's the deal with black or white face makeup in entertainment?

Someone did it long long LONG ago on stage to give a vague impression, or comedic one of a race they weren't....
others have immatated that...
some claim it ONLY represents offense to black or white people...

*lots of comedy is done at the expense of SOMEBODY. But NOBODY does comedy to start riots, hate people, or other nefarious things

Well we all know blackface was a racist meme. The Wayans brothers' "White Chicks" was a helluva good parody of the whole concept. I've always liked that movie and I'm surprised it has such a low IMDb rating.

So yeah, just admit it. Blackface is part of the whole systemic racism against blacks. "Whiteface" is just a funny joke and why would it bother us white folks?

By I agree with you, absurd that blackface is now banned. Black people, deal with it. We live in a time of Orwellian censorship.

I was friends with a black woman on IMDb. I once made a comment about Michelle Obama's nappy hair, she tore into me and has never forgiven me for it. I guess as white men we can't really understand why blacks may have legitimate criticisms of some of this stuff.

I’m not personally offended by blackface, but I can see why others are, and since it was never that ENTERTAINING anyway, I couldn’t give a shit that it’s seen as bad form now.

Interestingly the Black Face example link in the OP's post was part of an anti racist episode by The Goodies and is critical of apartheid in South Africa. There were a number of TV shows in the 70's in the UK and Australia that featured a lot of racial humour and slurs but were actually anti racist.

Overall I think if people stopped making a big deal about black or white face it would have died out already. People keep talking about it though and some people like Justin Trudeau don Black face as part of costume parties because it's "naughty". I'm not offended by it but I don't think anyone has ever done black or white face well in terms of entertainment. It was always just a cheap gimmick.
