can we worship anyone LESS talented?

at rock bottom, where do we go from here?
creating CRIMINALS, forcing them to do bad things, and worship them for it?

AlexFromTarget
HawkTuah girl
Kardashians

people worshipped for being nothing... what is the next deevolutionary step for fame and fortune?

You used to have to be GOOD at something to stand out. Now, the goalpost has moved to "nothing". So I ask, where do you go from nothing?
If NOTHING is all it takes, what is next?

Maybe sports. Perhaps SPORTS is the next big step, where people great at sports making millions are displaced by nobodys, doing nothing, and we throw millions at them instead?

reply

Don't even know who the first 2 are.

With The Kardashians - I never got it. I agree with you 100%. A billion dollar enterprise, go figure. No talent whatsoever, not even particularly good looking, IMO.

This may be out of the box, but athletes, professional ones, I believe they deserve the millions they get.

Take baseball - only 750 people on the entire planet can do what they do.
Basketball - only 360
Football - around 1500

IOW - you have to be spectacularly talented to do what a professional athlete can do. Thus, the millions they earn makes sense.

A nickel is too much spent on a Kardashian.

reply

I do agree about atheletes... they display amazing talent worth funding.

So, my example is... when the FAME bar is lowered to dirt level... what is the next possible lowering? Where do you go after dirt? Must be subtracting from somewhere else, like maybe sports? If we can remove ALL FORMS OF RATINGS from actors or fame, will we do the same with sports figures? Maybe AI will create whole leagues of sexy players people would rather watch and beleive are real.... I don't know....

Just not sure what the next LOWERED bar will be. I thought we hit bottom, then a girl spits on a dick and makes millions.

reply

Others may sink lower and lower and lower, to the dirt level, but you don't have to.

You can't control what others do. Someone thought the Kardashians were worth spending money on. In my mind, based on this, anything is possible.

With sports, well, the NFL did have scrubs for a little while, back in '87 maybe?

That didn't last. MLB went on strike in 94, that didn't last either.

But who knows, if either league goes on strike again, maybe AI will replace them. As I said, anything is possible.

Your last sentence - I'm not sure who you are talking about although I am aware Kim K did make a sex tape.

its good to be isolated from internet stupidity.

reply

Jesus- yeah checked it out.

Well I suppose this is this generation's version of "Girl's Gone Wild".

One difference though, Haliey Welch is not even hot. Very average, fair at best.

Ok, and previously a minimum wage factory worker - yeah, well this actually makes sense.

Well, what can you do, someone out there thought she was worth spending $ on.

She doesn't do a thing for me.

ANyway, thanks for bringing me up to date.

reply

Who says anyone is worshipping anyone?

Just because some media outlet covers them, that doesn't mean anything.

reply

Who’s Alex from Target?

reply

Apparently, you're worshipping him.

reply

I must be worshipping him from afar then, since I have no clue who this person is. Must have missed whatever the story was there.

reply

Well if he doesn't answer your prayers, you'll know what happened.

While Alex may not be able to hold a candle to Ba'al, at least he answers me on Instagram.

reply

He's a perfect example of spot light from doing nothing. hawk tuah is this mintues example.

can it go lower?

reply

Interesting you mention sports. Ray Gun the crap breakdancer from Australia got more media attention than anyone else during the Paris Olympics.

That said people have been making $$ from being nothing more than famous for a while now it’s not a new thing.

reply

isn't it WEIRD though, that this happens? Why should anyone care about some pointless garbage? I feel like it all BEGAN with the internet stupor highway. Without the net, dumb would not spread so fast, nor be accepted?
Did it happen BEFORE the net?

Seems like you had to have real talent to rise to the top.

reply

I'm pre internet. There were always celebs who were famous for no other reason than they were famous, usually talentless or with dubious talent. Back then in Australia at least we didn't have Pay TV and only had 5 TV stations so people tended to watch the same things and TV shows and celebs had a bigger share of the market. Magazines, especially women's gossip rags also helped promote the talentless.

The internet has sped things up but Reality TV also introduced the concept of the ordinary person becoming a star. Big Brother, Survivor etc Paris Hilton although wealthy was also a no body for the most part before she started her "reality" shows.

reply

I don’t know anything about those people you mentioned, but there’s a lot of people who worship that Jesus guy, and he ain’t done nothing for me either. In fact the bitch owes me 20 bucks. I know it’s his birthday and everything but c’mon JC, cough it up 🤑🙏

reply

School shooters

That would be worse.

reply

I do think we give them far far too much press. Should be a law to not get ANY press about them.

I'd like to address the sports issue. It's already happened with the major sports here in the US. And professional salaries have reached the point of absurdity. Take Shohei Ohtani, for example... he's really a remarkable player, had a great season, was part of the team that won the 2024 World Series. But his contract is for around $700 million, which roughly averages out to around $70 million per season. He's not worth that...no player today is worth that. Max Scherzer, who used to be a great pitcher and will likely end up being a MLB Hall Of Famer when his playing career is over, got paid $43 million for his 2024 season, where he went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA. I can cite similar cases for the NBA and NFL also. Some of these guys just make ridiculous money today.

I'd also like to cite college football, because I used to be a huge fan (Ohio State is my favorite team, but I'm a fan of college football in general). Tomorrow marks the beginning of the 12-team playoff and I will watch. However, this new playoff system, combined with the NIL money for players, is really ruining college football, IMO. I've thought about starting a college football thread the past few weeks (because I know there are other fans of college football here besides me), but I just can't do it. I just don't have the enthusiasm for college football that I used to have... it's not the same for me anymore.

Finally, look at female sports. Caitlin Clark is pretty much the sole reason why the WNBA experienced a huge jump in attendance/viewership this past season. While she is a good player and has skills, there have been quite a few players over the years that were better players than Clark is. I'm also a fan of LPGA Golf. Nelly Korda and Lydia Ko both had great seasons and are great representatives of Women's Golf. Yet, the most popular Women's golfer today (in terms of Instagram followers and Internet popularity) is Paige Spirinac. Sex appeal, like it or not, matters when it comes to female sports... it's just the way it is.

But, yes, I've seen the "glory days" of the NBA and the NFL (and, to a certain degree, MLB... although one can make the argument that its glory days occurred before I was born). But professional sports has been on the decline for a long time now.

reply

I'm not sure that's anything new. Back in the day there were people called socialites who were known for being wealthy and fashionable, and not much else. They were sort of a I guess you could say classier version of the Kardashians.

reply

But I would compare the modern version as random peasants becoming socialites unrdeservedly so.

At least the old socialites already had the money thus status
