Windows 10 End of Support

I just got a notice that by Oct. or 2025 Windows will no longer support Windows 10. What does this mean exactly? They imply I will have to get a new device with Windows 11 on it. What happens if I don't? Will I not be able to use my old computer with Windows 11? Or if not, will it no longer be functional with the old Windows 10? I don't understand why the new OS will not work on the same computer that used the old OS. Is it time to go with an Apple?

reply

You just won't get any more updates

Signed, million man.

reply

Correct.

reply

You won't get any updates, resulting in escalating security issues and potential incompatibility problems. It's basically the same issues as cell phones that no longer receive updates.

Enjoy it while you can.

reply

Windows 11 is trash.

reply

They've all been trash since XP. I hate Microsoft, Windows, Gates and his monopoly.

reply

I loved XP, it was so user friendly and a lot easier to navigate.

reply

This.

reply

Same here. I used until I absolutely couldn't make it work any more. Skipped to 7, which wasn't bad, used it until early this year. Now 10/11 with forced updates and restarts, I'm back to cussing it.

reply

I thought they were jumping to 12?

Windows 11 update is free to devices that meet its requirements, if you are unclear whether your machine is compatible with Windows 11, I have linked an article below. If your machine doesn't meet said requirements, then it's time to get a new computer, because as pointed out above it is not a good idea to use a computer on the internet without security updates.

You sound like a Microsoft Rep. Some of the hardware restrictions are arbitrary. There is no reliable way to transfer one's apps from a Win10 to a Win11 machine that I know of. Contrast that w/ Apple. I had my 14 upgraded completely from my old i Iphone is less than an hour, with almost no trouble.

reply

I should have added what CraigC wrote below--Most PC's that will run 10 will run 11.

reply

My main gripe is the lack of portability, along w/ a suspicion that MS (like Apple, etc.) is pushing obsolescence. But as posted below, I've ordered a 'like new' win11 pro lenovo for about 400 all paid, and w/ the $110 zinstall utility, may have a soft landing.

I have too much time/trouble invested in installing all these apps to do it all over again.

reply

Too much time and trouble? It's easy as shit when everything is still working. 20yrs ago we had to do it when the system crashed. Literally starting from scratch and hopefully you maintained a backup of your data.

reply

No more updates and shit will eventually stop working. Most PC's that will run 10 will run 11.

reply

Great! Thanks for that.

reply

Yes, you can simply try to update, and it should try to either bring you up on 11 or tell you you're out of luck.

reply

It's off topic but I'd like to take this opportunity to say fuck Microsoft and their shitty operating systems.

reply

Amen to that!

reply

I JUST USE THE DAMN THING UNTIL IT STOPS WORKING..THEN I GET A NEW ONE.....YOU CAN'T START BENDING OVER FOR WHAT MACHINES WANT.....THAT'S HOW SKYNET STARTS.😉

reply

I can respect the "ride it until the wheels fall off" mentality.

reply

When the machine claims it cant go on and isnt compatible with W11 you beat the machine into submission by making it run Linux instead.

That'll learn it!

I normally use a large hammer 🔨 - it doesn’t necessarily fix anything, but it makes me feel better.

I've found a utility called zinstall ($110) that apparently does this (port all my apps & files from the old win10 machine to the new win11 machine) - worth the price to me if it works....
