Being able to "like" comments here (and elsewhere)

What are your thoughts on being able to "like" comments on this site with a thumbs up button, like on Facebook, Instagram, etc.?

I've seen it suggested before and no offense to anyone who likes that system but I'm glad we don't have the ability to do that. I think being able to like comments turns it into a popularity contest and could affect how people post.

Actually, I think the "like" system is potentially one of the most damaging things on the internet. 😏

I'm unhappy to say that this site's tech is kinda old and almost outdated. Someone wrote this coding, I think, almost 20 years ago, and so it's kinda simplistic compared to places like Reddit or different social media today.

Sure, MC is old and outdated, it’s the Atari 2600 of chat sites. Bare bones, nothing fancy, other sites are real fancy.

But it’s the posters that make a site worthwhile and we have top people here.
Good people, good times.

Those other joints give me a headache.

I love this site. When IMDb first shut down I tried Reddit but it felt like pure chaos to me. I posted a thread and when I came back later the same day I couldn't even find it. 😂 It was overwhelming and did not have a tight-knit community feel.

Next I tried tmdb where I posted on and off for a few years but it was the other end of the spectrum. Posting a thread on that site was like sending a tumbleweed tumbling down a dusty ghost town road.

As Goldilocks might say, this board is just right. 😊

That's great to hear :) Sometimes being retro isn't a bad thing. I remember IMDB and was unhappy when they shut down the comments sections 8 years ago. What's interesting was, I thought it was all gone forever, and found this site by accident when trying to look up discussions for Gone With The Wind randomly a few years ago.

And yes, I wish we could all have visible avatars and be able to post things like visible memes or gifs, and be able to upvote like you can on Disqus or other sites.

I just listened to two GoBots theme songs, one for the toy and one for the cartoon hoping to find something to disprove your claim of troll-ness. Unfortunately, just as they were considered discount robots, they had discount theme songs.

When I was a little girl my parents took me to a department store so that I could pick out a toy. Of everything there I picked out a giant stuffed dog. Apparently I wanted to name it "DOG", but I couldn't talk right yet so I named it "DOS".

😊 It sounds like most of us in this thread are on the same page. I guess basically what I'm saying is that I think this website is great the way it is so I hope it doesn't change.

I mean I would love it if people could see our avatars with our posts but that's okay... 😁
