I went to the zoo today.

I was surprised at how small wallabies are! I thought they were about half the size of a kangaroo, but no, they're only a bit bigger than my cat.

Also had an amazing 10 minutes with a tiger who was directly on the other side of the glass just chilling. Absolutely beautiful 😍.

They have a really nice set up (as far as captivity goes) where the animals can be outside in their enclosure or be inside away from people. But with some of them, you can then go to the back of their den and see them behind a one way mirror. They stay happy and hidden, and we get to be inches away seeing amazing animals.

Speaking of native Australian animals, wombats are SO cute.

North America's only marsupial is the opossum, a much maligned creature that has its charms.

I went to the National Zoo last week.

Did you see anything that impressed you?

reply

Raven. Believe it or not. They are like 3 times the size of a crow. Oh and a bald eagle

reply

Oh gosh, I saw a photo of a bald eagle next to a human, they are enormous! I had no idea. The size of their talons is quite scary.

reply

Yep. It was about the size of my kid.

Most wallabies are a bit bigger than that, but there are a few different types in the species. From the sounds of your description it may have been a rock wallaby you saw. They’re pretty adorable though, aren’t they?

Sounds like you had a good time. I try to visit zoos as often as I can. Not that I’m all that fond of seeing wild animals in captivity, but so much of their work is about saving endangered species and I’m happy if my coin goes towards that.

reply

I did wonder, thank you. I'm not sure which type they were but they were very entertaining to see 😊

AWESOME...I TOOK ALI WHEN SHE WAS LITTLE....GIANT LION WALKED RIGHT UP TO HER AND JUST STARED INTO HER SOUL THROUGH THE GLASS....UNFORGETTABLE MOMENT.

reply

The red wolf tried to bite my kids head through the glass.

I had a white tiger stare into my soul once right before it sprayed me with pee. Other than sitting front row at the whale show for a rinse after that, it was lesson learned never to sit in the front again.

reply

Yeah it's certainly something I won't forget in a hurry. Not been to the zoo since I was about 5.

Last time I went to a zoo, it was to attend a jazz concert. There of all places. Imagine watching this band live with tigers pacing in their cages just behind you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NrBL8Yh21o

reply

You'd think the noise would really bother them. Maybe they're jazz fans 😁

reply

Yeah, it puzzled me also, how they nonchalantly just kept pacing, along with that loud music. The entire concept of that concert intrigued me to begin with, which is why I attended. I mean, who comes up with the idea of holding a jazz concert in the middle of a zoo? Not only did it work, it was a stroke of genius.

reply

That sounds like fun! I wish my zoo had tigers and wallabies. They briefly had an Australia exhibit years ago but it was temporary. They are building an Asia portion now though so maybe eventually we'll have tigers. The main continents represented currently are Africa and North America and it's a wonderful zoo.

reply

I was hoping for elephants but I need to go to a bigger zoo for them. They did have a lion and giraffes. Also those sheep that climb mountains on a knife edge. It was really good.

reply

The zoo in my state has elephants as well as rhinoceros, but they're usually so far from where you stand that you have to peer through special Zoo-provided binoculars and hope you don't catch an eye disease.

My fave on the internet is Fiona the Hippo at the Cincinnati Zoo

Awwwwhat a little sweetheart. She won't be so chill in a couple of years πŸ˜…. Aren't they one of the biggest attackers of humans or something? They can run at 30 miles an hour.

Did something happen to her mother for the keepers to be so involved?

reply

Born prematurely. Baby hippo just adorably cute. Fiona will turn 8 in January, and yes, hippos are very dangerous, they are naturally aggressive and ornery animals. Fiona's dad, Henry, passed away at 36 about a year after her birth. Another male, Tucker, was brought in, Bibi became pregnant and gave birth to Fiona's half-brother, Fritz, in 2022. So the current "bloat" is Bibi, Tucker, Fiona, and Fritz.

I have no interest in the zoo anymore. Seen all the animals plenty of times.
