The most 1980s song

I would say it's this one. Can you find another one with equal or greater embodiment of the 1980s?

Duran Duran was the first thing that popped into my mind.

reply

Anything Duran Duran was my first thoguht too.

reply

Oh yes, one of the most ultimate 1980s bands and a song I love dearly. It just drips of intrigue. Different songs stir up different mental images from the 80s. When I hear Rio I imagine myself at a modeling shoot on the beach twirling quickly in my stirrup pants, jelly shoes and poofy bangs with the photographer yelling, "Beautiful, beautiful!" as he clicks picture after picture, knowing that this cover shoot may be the defining moment of his career.

What were we talking about again?

reply

I'd say you nailed it with "Rio". That was my first thought when I saw the thread title.

reply

An iconic video, of an iconic song, by an iconic band.

reply

I would have picked this one by them. This is the one I always think of first

reply

I think MTV happened just at the right time for them.

reply

Definitely.

reply

They embraced the medium and ran with it to great effect.

reply

Yeah, nice tune that I remember. I love a lot of 80s music but this one immediately jumped into my mind https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izGwDsrQ1eQ

Btw, I like you. You're a welcome, refreshing newcomer with topics that many can relate to and I like the way you express yourself

reply

First, thank you! 😊 That's very kind. I've enjoyed my time here so far and appreciate the warm welcome.

Secondly, for me personally that may be the consummate 1980s song. When I was in sixth grade I was sure I would marry George Michael largely because of that song. Turns out the chances of that were quite slim, but goodness he had some gorgeous hair.

Yeah, early love was agonizing, wasn't it? 😁 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuG_fTwoUoU

This was me in grade school. πŸ˜„ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwHa5dLYaMA

Too slow. And not New Wave.

'Most 1980s' immediately says to me: synths. So maybe... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1GxjzHm5us

reply

Believe it or not I did not know that song but yes, it sounds very 1980s with its synthesizer and metronome like drum beat. It would work well as the backdrop of many a 1980s movie.

reply

It was the UK's biggest selling 12" record. But I don't know if it made any significant impact in the USA.

reply

That's why I love that this is an international board. I learn things!

reply

That song was popular in the US but not like it was in the UK. At least not when it was new. However, since its release it’s gone on to become really popular over here and is essentially a classic. It’s even inspired a few remakes β€” most of which are bad lol.

Anyway New Order is awesome and I love that tune.

reply

Ah. Good to know. It was, of course, released on Factory Records. Anyone who has seen 24 Hour Party People will have an idea of how badly run that company was.

They had trouble enough distributing things properly in the UK market. The idea that they could mount a successful operation across the USA seemed, frankly, fanciful to me. I thought it might have just been an import single that got completely lost in the mix.

reply

Too gay for mainstream audiences.

Some good choices here...I'll go with this one:

reply

Ah yes, another one filled with intrigue and drama and in this case, no words. The 1980s was a very intriguing and dramatic time filled with hairspray, questioning authority and songs that sounded like they came out of robots.

I got their best of CD, its pretty good. so many good hits.

reply

What a wonderful trip down memory lane this is proving to be, and this was another song I loved. A repetitive theme so far seems to be drama and intrigue and this song took it to a whole 'nother level. Annie Lennox was a badass with a haunting voice, staring you down while singing her intense songs in minor keys.

Another 80s gem with a powerful video. I'd say one of the most memorable videos of all time.

reply

A good one πŸ‘

How about this, a contrast to my previous submission? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El1kgCqD7Xk

reply

I really like this song, Paula was so hot.

reply

Absolutely! I used to kickstart my day with this because it's so high energy. Did you happen to notice the cameos by Arsenio Hall? His late night talk show was also a popular 80s thing.

reply

Yeah I sang this many times back in my bedroom pretending I was a rockstar on stage. The song was particularly infectious.

The drama! The intrigue! The intensity! The androgyny! The big hair! Staring at the camera as if he's staring through your soul!

It checks many of the 1980s boxes for sure. 😁
