I was looking back at the films I've seen in a movie theater so far in 2024, and realize I mostly see re-releases of older films. Of the 104 movies I've seen in an actual movie theater so far this year, only 21 have been new films. This got me to wondering if others on this site have a similar breakdown.
I assume that this site attracts mostly hardcore movie fans, so things might skew a little more on the side of older films than would a sampling of the general population. Am I right? Even if you don't keep track, what's your sense of it?
My 2024 so far has been:
104 movies in a theater
21 new releases
83 old films
4 silent films
8 animated films
3 documentary films
1 short film
12 foreign films
The movie theatre near me doesn't usually have older movies. This year I have only seen new releases at the theatre. I would love to see more older films but they don't usually show them.
That's the direction I seem to be headed in. I've always sought out older films on a big screen whenever possible, but in the past there were a lot more new films that I wanted to see.
I've been lucky enough to have always lived in cities with good repertory and arthouse theaters. There are at least 9 theaters near me that show older films on a regular basis, and the local Cinemark often has one-off showings of something older.
I wish there were more new films being made that were interesting to me, but it seems with each passing year there are fewer and fewer new films that catch my eye.
I live in a not very big city. We've got a big chain that's show older films, but they seem to cycle through the same films, for the most part, mainly well known classics. AT this point I've seen the ones I want to rewatch.
"Of the 104 movies I've seen in an actual movie theater so far this year, only 21 have been new films."
I don't think I've seen 21 new films in an actual movie theater in the last 10 years.
I did see "Special Engagement" releases of "Cabaret" and "Lawrence of Arabia" in the last 3 years... Both of them, the film quality was a grade higher than "poor."
I'm in Los Angeles, plenty of good theaters, I just don't care about what they're offering.
Now that I think about it, I don't think I've watched 21 movies in a theater in the last 10 years, that I wasn't dragged into with the wife and/or kids...
What are the top 20 films released 2015 or later that I should watch?
I can suggest the films of 2015 and later that I found most engaging, but based on what you shared about films you liked/disliked, I don't think there is much overlap in our taste.

This is not the cinema, but I am going to see our local symphony playing the score to Jurassic Park along with the movie at a local concert hall this weekend.
