How about favorite movies that were released on days that end in "y"?

reply

Oof, this one was even more challenging than the 9s thread. Standard caveats apply.

Your 50, 60, 70 and 00 picks were all strong contenders. And 1980 was particularly difficult for me. So many great films that year; I just spitballed.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
Animal Crackers (1930)
High Sierra (1940)
All About Eve (1950)
The Apartment (1960)
Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo (1970)
Airplane! (1980)
Miller's Crossing (1990)
The Dish (2000)
True Grit (2010)
The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020)

And my 00 and 2020 picks are personal favorites that I feel don't get talked about enough. The Dish is absolutely hilarious and charming, with moments of genuine tension and awe, and The Wolf of Snow Hollow is my *third* favorite werewolf movie, after AAWiL and Ginger Snaps. Writer/director/star Jim Cummings seemingly distilled many elements of his first feature, Thunder Road, in to a more focussed horror/drama/dark comedy.

I gave Airplane! serious consideration. Jimmie Walker talks about his cameo:

It's just so damn good. But so is Raging Bull, The Elephant Man, The Blues Brothers, Altered States...

And that interview is fantastic. It's in my YT algorithm now, thanks to you.

Black Swan another cool pick.

1930 - ?? (Can't think of one)
1940 - Night Train to Munich (also ‘Gaslight’ ‘Rebecca’ and ‘The Great Dictator’ – a good year for film)
1950 - D.O.A.
1960 - Psycho
1970 - Scrooge
1980 - The Empire Strikes Back
1990 - Total Recall (Too many to list but this was another great year for film)
2000 - Shadow of the Vampire
2010 – The American
2020 - Sonic the Hedgehog

1990 was the hardest to pick, so many great films were released that year.

reply

Psycho was my #2 pick for 1960
The Empire Strikes Back was a strong contender for me for 1980

1970 is a hard year with lots of great films, but that’s a solid pick. 👍

reply

Oddly enough pal it wasn't hard for me. I've actually only seen 10 movies from 1970. Bird was the absolute run away of the selection.

The ten;
- The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
- The Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion
- Five Dolls for an August Moon
- Hatchet for the Honeymoon
- The Vampire Lovers
- Scars of Dracula
- Taste the Blood of Dracula
- Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny & Girly
- Valerie and her Week of Wonders
- Beneath the Planet of the Apes

For reference I've seen 31 movies from 1971 and 32 from 1972, but I've only seen 5 movies from 1969 and 14 from 1968.

For the 60s (and prior decades) my viewing isn't that substantial, it really ramps up from 1971 and onwards.

I’m basically in the same boat as you with my numbers really taking off around 1971 and peaking in 1977. If I had to guess, your peak probably occurs somewhere in the early eighties.

But yeah, my favorite from 1970 would easily be Compenaros. It’s one of those that is perfect to me and I never get tired of rewatches.
