sequels you prefer over the original even though most disagree?

What are some sequels that you think are actually better than the first despite most considering them inferior? That doesn't mean most necessarily view them as bad, per say, just that most would say the original is superior.

For me, Police Story 2 blows the original out of the water. Not that I don't like the original, but the sequel impressed me much more as it has a better story, better action, better direction from Jackie, and even better emotional stakes. The first Police Story is a lot of fun but it's also very schizophrenic with its tone and direction. The sequel does a much better job balancing action, comedy, and drama.

What's yours?

Return of the Living Dead: Part II

Love that one!

reply

Good campy fun.

I was put off the first time I saw it. I wasn't ready for the, "Get that damn screwdriver outta ma head'"

I went back later and really enjoyed it.

reply

People expect it to be so similar to the first one. I get it, but it works in its own as a cheesy movie.

reply

Totally. I actually saw this before the original.

reply

Edited my previous post for the massive grammatical mistakes.

Anyway, I saw the sequel first too. I wanted the first one to be as campy but unfortunately I didn't get what I wanted.

reply

i don't know if i prefer it, but you could make a good argument that godfather 2 is better than 1.

reply

That’s not unfair to say, you’d likely have a lot of people agree with this.

I don’t disagree, I’d consider them a close match up. I’m still not sure how they managed to fuck up Godfather III but here we are.

reply

i think 3 isn't that bad. lets say than 1 and 2 never existed and they released 3... it would be known as an amazing film. what makes it seem bad is that 1 and 2 are far superior.

but yeah i've seen a lot of polls and websites actually rate 2 higher than 1.

reply

Part 3 lost the handle. The Mafia DOES NOT launch helicopter attacks on high rise buildings in mid-town.

That was just silly.
You know how they kill you..?
They say ‘I’m picking you up in twenty minutes, catch the Knicks game, order some burgers…’

Then you have a shoelace around your neck, a .32 pistol in your mouth, an ice pick in your spine.

The Mob operates in secrecy, they NEVER light up the town.

That’s just foolish writing.

reply

yeah i agree with the helicopter thing. a lot of people say one of the things that ruined it was sofia coppola. she's the not the greatest actress, especially for a film like that.

but i think generally if someone would have released 3, without 1 and 2. and it just got put out there. it would have got favorable reviews.

it wasn't the best film ever, but like i say, 1 and 2 being some of the greatest movies ever made it look a lot worse being in the same light and part of the trilogy.

reply

Sofia Coppola was awful.

reply

I agree with you on Sofia Coppola, wow was she an awful actress. She did go on to direct a couple well regarded ‘girly’ movies. I respect that.

I also thought Andy Garcia was a bit too hammy. I really enjoy Garcia in a lot of his films, I truly do.

But he came off as a bit ‘try hard’ in GF3. I found him a distraction. The script should have focused on Michael and all of his regrets.

Seriously, you sell dope, run guns, order your soldiers to murder dozens of people..? That’s gotta fuck up your head a bit.

reply

This is actually a two-part story, so I don't think it fits the category.

I thought Rocky II and The Empire Strikes Back were amazing sequels, they took cool themes from the originals and really built on that lore.

I was the first kid in the neighborhood to see Empire and all of my pals cornered me to learn the details when I got home. They were all ‘tell us, tell us what happened!’ and I was like ‘fine, Luke got his hand chopped off and Han Solo is dead.’

They totally didn’t believe me lol.

reply

You didn't tell them who Luke's father was?

The Matrix: Reloaded. And for the very scene people most hated in it, too: the Architect.

It just flipped everything we thought we knew on its head, turning the entire world into a broken machine abandoned in a lifeless wasteland, eternally and meaninglessly repeating its last pointless commands on an infinite loop.

I also loved how absolutely nonchalant the Architect was about the whole thing, too. We're all cheering for Neo kicking ass, and suddenly there he is, like "bitch, please. You're just another variable in the equation, predicted, accounted for, dealt with; so if you're quite done playing the bigshot, we'd all like you to go sit in your corner and do as you're told."

reply

Yeah that scene is amazing.

The Matrix sequels may not have the narrative perfection of the first, but they’re anything but lazy cash-grabs - they really challenge the viewer, and the various fights are still mindblowingly impressive. I still watch the Burly Brawl thinking ‘how the hell did they do that??’

Neither sequel tops the original but they’re definitely better than their reputations would suggest.

I liked A Quiet Place part 2 and Day One more than the first movie. But I'm a big fan of all three.
