sequels you prefer over the original even though most disagree?

What are some sequels that you think are actually better than the first despite most considering them inferior? That doesn't mean most necessarily view them as bad, per say, just that most would say the original is superior.

For me, Police Story 2 blows the original out of the water. Not that I don't like the original, but the sequel impressed me much more as it has a better story, better action, better direction from Jackie, and even better emotional stakes. The first Police Story is a lot of fun but it's also very schizophrenic with its tone and direction. The sequel does a much better job balancing action, comedy, and drama.

What's yours?

I prefer The Boondock Saints 2 over the original. Both of them entertaining though.

Back to the Future 2 for me. The first is great, but I prefer the darker tone and visiting the future rather than the past. Plus, the hoverboard featured in it is almost as iconic to the series as the DeLorean.

reply

Definitely "The Godfather Part 3"

No doubt it was the best film in the series

"Money Never Sleeps" was great as well, easily topping "Wall Street"

Oh and lets not forget "Rocky 5" - superior film making

reply

I wouldn't call it the best, but it gets a lot more flack than it deserves. I think it was the victim of incredibly high expectations.

reply

No, no chance.

The Godfather part 3 was much better than part 1 and 2.

No doubt about it.

No way Jose!

reply

Haha - I was only joking Shogun and Zarkoff.

First of all, "Rocky 5" and "Money Never Sleeps" were awful.

"The Godfather part 3" - on its own it would have been ok. But in comparison to parts 1 and 2 - it's a huge step down.

In all seriousness, the only answer I have to this question is possibly "The Godfather part 2".

One goes back and forth in terms of whether "Godfather 1" or "Godfather 2" is better.

Conan the Destroyer

Conan the Barbarian was kind of boring but Conan the Destroyer was funny. Plus it had two hot chicks (Sarah Douglas and Olivia d'Abo).

reply

I politely disagree Sir.

Conan was a murderer, a thief, he was not a nice person.

I have read all of the novels and short stories multiple times, I own a couple hundred Conan comic books, Conan was NOT a humorous clown. He was a slayer.

Hard question. The original ‘Welcome to Mooseport’ cannot be surpassed, regardless of how many sequels they throw after it.

Jaws 4 - The Revenge.

the first 3 movies are fun monster movies. but Jaws 4 is a completely different beast entirely that really breaks from those films. its shown much more from a psychological aspect in the form of existential crisis and many fathoms deeper than the previous movies. an ontological question of "why we exist?" viewed as a cerebral survival game of cat and mouse between woman and fish.

people will say "bro, the shark roared!". well, sharks cant roar. we know they cant roar. the film makers know sharks cant roar. so, why did it roar? because it wasn't a shark.
the shark was a representation of ellen's emotions in light of her husband and her son's deaths and her fear(shark) of the possible loss of her surviving loved ones. as "Death" haunts her no matter where she goes, she doesn't feel safe even while sleeping. continuously obsessed with worry of death coming for her. she lives entirely in fear. but i also think she longs for the shark to consume her from her depressive crisis.

i feel its a modernization of Moby Dick, although ahab is consumed by his obsession as hes pulled into the abyss by the whale. ellen is able to find life's purpose as a heroine and slay her personal demon, defeating her obsession/grief/fear/shark, having the ability to move on and accept her existence in the struggle of life with it's unpredictable violence of nature.
