Are the Olympics becoming a thing of the past?

-12 applied to host 2004 - Greece won
-10 applied to host 2008 - China won
-9 applied to host 2012 - London won
-7 applied to host 2016 - Brazil won
-5 applied to host 2020 - Tokyo won
-2 applied to host 2024 - Both won back-to-back with France first then US in 2028

Cost to build new buildings to hiding/cleaning up the city's problems to political issues to environmental damage.

The games should be going in countries which already have the infrastructure and not be hosted by developing countries.

The public effort for stadiums and all the necessary infrastructure becomes the way for wealth making by corrupted politicians and their circles

If you want to further ruin a third world country let them host the games

reply

I felt that during CoVid any sport where the athletes didn't directly compete against each other should have been played out in their home countries. The idea that they were flying these people from all over the world during a time when ordinary folk were locked down was stupid to me.

They could do the same now to cut down on the amount of infrastructure that needs to be built every four years.

reply

This is not possible, better cancel the games altogether. The gathering has a symbolism, it's an ancient peacemaking ceremony, it's not about records it's about healthy competition

reply

I'd be all for cancelling them. The amount of money some countries spend on training their athletes could be best spent elsewhere. In my country (Australia) it costs up to $37 million to win each gold medal in term of training!

I for one an looking forward to the strikes, riots and the media trying to cover up everything that is unpleasant.

Although this story seems to have slipped through:

I didn't notice your post when I posted something similar. When the cities that host games aren't safe than that isn't going to help either.

reply

Controversial one but given these games tend to happen in more affluent countries, when those countries or cities go into decline it takes away from any splendor the games may have had.

Not if the Mongolian team uniforms have anything to do with it, they're glorious.

Interest seems to be waning. However......

I wonder if it is an age thing.

For me, The Olympics were absolutely huge, in 1972 (first one, little boy) - Olga Korbut. Mark Spitz. Men's basketball with the stunning Russia game. The Russian weight lifter - Vasily Alesxsiv, something like that.

76 - Incredible US boxing team, Nadia, Franz Klammer, Dorothy Hamill

80 - What else, US Olympic Hockey team

Then if one remembers correctly, we boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics.

Lost interest after that.
