Heroes all πŸ˜”

I am a US Army veteran and I've met a few WWII veterans over the years at the VA hospital. It was fascinating talking with them. I fought in Desert Storm but that was a cake walk compared to what these men went through. Much respect.

reply

I have every respect for the armed forces.

reply

Yes they were - and they were so young. My husband and I were there for the 55th anniversary and it was very moving.

reply

Wow! That was 25 years ago.

An interesting chart:

reply

I’m not sure how accurate that chart is - I think the decline will be much faster.

reply

Maybe a bit. I don't see roughly 700 making it to 100 years old.

Before Saving Private Ryan...there was The Longest Day

Which was a favourite film of mine growing up.

reply

Me too. That scene with Richard Burton talking about the German with the boots on the wrong feet always comes to mind.

This is a great movie about an elaborate plot to extract the invasion plans from an American officer: https://moviechat.org/tt0057809/36-Hours

Added to my watch list.

reply

I think you'll like it.

reply

The more time that has past the fewer the veterans that remain.

reply

I had an uncle who died there. I also once had a neighbor who fought in The Battle of the Bulge. Great old guy! Used to love talking to him. He routinely gave me veggies from his garden. We both lived just two blocks from here: https://www.travelks.com/listing/eisenhower-presidential-library-museum-and-boyhood-home/207/

reply

Unfortunately, there are fewer left every year.

reply

Only 30 made the crossing to France on this occasion.

reply

Wow! There's a fact I was never aware of. I've been loving the images of those colorful, dignified old codgers all day.

reply

When I think of how carefree my life was as a young man, I can't even imagine what these young men must have felt. Heroes all indeed.
