Earlier today I went to a new diner that recently opened up in town here. I thought the breakfast was good and the waitress was very nice but when I asked for more cream for a coffee to go the guy there (I assume the owner) started yelling at me that I had already used too much cream. I had tipped on the bill slightly above 25% so I wasn’t being cheap myself. I just thought it was very funny.
I once ordered a coffee to go from a new shop near where I was living when I was about 21 or so.
After paying, the owner, who was working the register, paused and looked at me intently as if reading my mind and then said, “Just to let you know, there's no free refills,” in what I interpreted as a contemptuous and accusatory tone.
Puzzled, I looked at him and replied, “What?”—wondering why he even mentioned that. I had never heard of free refills at a coffee shop, let alone thought to ask for one.
But he repeated, “There's no free refills.”
I was lost for words. I felt like going all Michael Douglas in the Korean store scene from Falling Down, but instead, I just slowly nodded and left. I never went back.
The coffee shop went out of business in about three months.
I suspect the new diner you went to today won't last long either.
