I can't think of another movie from 1976 that I even like, let alone another favorite.

reply

Taxi Driver - Groundbreaking study of alienation, mental illness, victimization, false narrative

Rocky - Innovative evocative reinvention of an old formula

The Outlaw Josey Wales - a cool, atmospheric dramatic & funny Western

Network.

That rant is epic:

Listen to it and tell me what's the difference between then and now.

This song follows that rant perfectly in my opinion:

Some good lists, indeed. I'd love to see any recommended independent (especially foreign) dramas around this time.. I say "especially foreign" because international movies seemed to have gone down in quality in the 70s, while American movies probably hit their mark. And partly because I'm running out of movies to watch, and my experimentation with sci-fi were always horrible. I like realistic horror, like the Italian "Fists in the Pocket" but never liked Dario Argento.

I'm also surprised directors didn't take advantage of the new freedom, because I think "Peeping Tom" is the best voyeuristic movie, despite the censorship and problems it caused Michael Powell.

If you mean the 70s, and not just 1976, I would say Italian Giallo and Euro Crime films were absolutely excellent during that period. Many other Italian genres also but those two reached their peak during that decade, in my opinion.

Not one mention on this thread of "Murder by Death" and I will not stand for it.
