It's kind of a funny/sad/ironic statement about this place that a thread about movies gets an "OT" in the subject.
1976 was a good year for me. Out of thirty-four films rated, twenty-nine of them were 6/10+. In fact my top ten were all 8/10+ (more or less in order):
Taxi Driver
Network
All the President's Men
Rocky
Carrie
The Tenant
The Outlaw Josey Wales
The Pink Panther Strikes Again
The Signalman (1976 TV Movie)
The Joy of Torture 2: Oxen Split Torturing (gore-adverse caveat emptor)
And per your post below, here are a few more gritty films that have varying degrees of horror elements to them that get 7/10 from me:
Marathon Man
Assault on Precinct 13
The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane
Alice, Sweet Alice
Who Can Kill a Child?
Beasts - a six episode UK horror TV mini-series penned by the brilliant Nigel Kneale. Uneven, but worth a watch.
And a few more 6/10 (still a positive rating!), which I'd still recommend to a genre fan who has that feeling of "running out of movies to watch."
Burnt Offerings
The Town That Dreaded Sundown
Squirm
God Told Me To
