I have to tell my Craig Stadler story. My brother and I were at Muirfield Village for the final round of the 1999 Memorial Tournament and we got to see Craig Stadler tee off on the first hole. The way they do it is to give a little introduction on the tee (Something like, "Now on the tee, from Columbus, Ohio, Jack Nicklaus.") and the players usually go through a "pre-shot routine" before they address and (finally) hit the ball.

Not Stadler. It was like this..."Now on the tee...from San Diego, California...Craig Stad--" WHACK! I swear he hit the ball before they even finished pronouncing his name (He didn't hit a very good shot...I think he hit a 5-wood off the tee, but it went in the right rough and I think he ended up making bogey, if I remember correctly). I'm not sure if that was what he usually did or what was going on...he was older then and I wonder if that was his way of protesting slow play or something (It really is a grind out there for the players...if you like to play fast---like I do-- forget it).

Besides his moustache and watching him in person, the other thing I remember about him is that he had massive forearms (similar to Popeye). He could really whip the club with that swing of his. I would not want to challenge him to a fight...he didn't look it, but he was a strong guy and he was pretty gruff at times. He had a really nice career on Tour.
