Favorite Prison Movies?

(in order)

Le Trou
Birdman of Alcatraz
A Man Escaped
Papillon
Lonely Are the Brave
Midnight Express
I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang
I Want To Live!
Cool Hand Luke
Brubaker
Escape From Alcatraz
The Hill

I notice this is the one time where I only have a couple of foreign movies, although they are among the best. I'd love to see some Eastern European movies like these in the 60s, when there were a lot of great directors. "Two Half Times in Hell" is a good movie, and was re-done by John Huston with Sylvestor Stallone in "Victory". There's another good prison movie with a really long name I can't remember.

No contest, "The Great Escape"!

A prison camp is still a prison, after all.

reply

True.. I love McQueen, but with so many characters, and the length, I couldn't really get into it. I know I was running out of my space in my DVR, but does the movie pick up the pace?

reply

It's not an action movie, there's only one chase scene and it was a late addition, most of the movie is really about clever people being incredibly clever, ingenious, and making something out of nothing. That's why I love the movie, if I had to describe the whole thing in one word, that word would be "Ingenuity", and not "action". And that's why I love the movie, there are so few movies made about intelligent people being intelligent, most movies about bright people are actually written by someone who isn't as bright as they think they are.

So if you like fast paced-action, you won't love "TGE", but well. It floats my boat.

Chained Heat is a classic! Linda Blair, Sybil Danning. I think Linda Blair did a few of those sorts of movies.

"One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" is in my Top 5, but R.P. acted "crazy" to avoid prison and instead get sent there.

True.

Women's Prison Massacre (1983)

One of my absolute favorites!! I’ve never seen the ole cork with the razor blade trick shown in any film other than this one. πŸ˜€
