I agree and I've made this point a lot, to no avail. Main reason being that politics has become so contentious for no reason and people seem to want to be on one side of the spectrum despite holding views closer to the middle because there's community in being angry over nothing together, since so many can't afford to be part of regular community activities anymore.

No, that's not wokeism.

No. Try googling it, even a biased site like Wikipedia will explain it to you.🍆

i am not even sure what woke is.

Woke isn’t defined by strong female characters, or minority characters. Woke is an agenda prioritizing identity politics.

We all noticed in movies likes Alien, Terminator, Star Wars etc. but no one cared because those movies were good, it was done well, and it was a small part of the overall story. Of the stuff you listed, I would say only The Wiz qualifies as woke. The goal was literally to make a black Wizard of Oz. But even that mostly gets a pass because it’s a musical with a pretty good soundtrack.

There is a big difference between a few obscure examples existing, and woke movies being mainstream like they are today

Personally I don't think any film made prior to the 2010s can be considered "woke." The world was just too different, not even that long ago.

I guess social media became more on the rise and movies drastically changed. The styles of filmmaking and political messaging suddenly became more prominent, I wasn't saying it was like the 80s

reply

I'd say the difference is that in the old days , whenever they were , a film with a message , or somthing to say , or that highlighted some sort of issue , would be lauded with praise and nominated for oscars.
probably still is ,

but then in dark corners of the internet , like this one , militant "film buffs" to put it the nice way , go apeshit and start yelling "I DONT WANT PREACHING AT!!!" , "WOKE !!!"

At least they typically were better about their messages within their storytelling, whether you agreed with them or not.

It's not wokeism.
In wokeism there is at least few of this criteria:

1. Superficial dichotomy between black/female/non-white and white males.
2. Racial or gender tensions.
3. The emphasis is on the characters identity and not character traits.
4. Criticism of the United States.
5. The emphasis is on the ideological - less about the story.
6. Using academic terms taken from postmodernism, gender study, post-colonialization and so on.

So said that Catwoman, Tomb Raider and Kill Bill is wokeism is an ridiculous. You want to know what's wokeism, seen the difference between Charlie's Angels (2000) and Charlie's Angels (2019).
