Your top three most chilling, blood-curdling moments in movies or TV.

I'm not talking about jump scares or gory gross-outs. I mean the moments that send a chill of supernatural terror up your spine from even just thinking about them years after watching the show or movie.

IMO, movies with these kind of scares are the very best horror films. Those that rely on jump scares and gore don't come anywhere close.

Mine:

#1 The bathtub woman in The Shining (1980)
#2 The vampire kid at the window in Salem's Lot (1979) TV miniseries
#3 The VVitch preparing the baby-fat flying ointment in The VVitch (2015)

Your first two are great, but I can’t recall the third scene, though I’ve seen the film at least once. Mine:

Regan/Pazuzu’s “I’ve been naughty” smirk to Karras when he finds Merrin in The Exorcist (1973)

Howie’s “O Lord!” moment from The Wicker Man (1973)

The epilogue scene from Noroi (2005)

I really have to get around to watching The Wicker Man. Noroi looks good, too! Thanks for the prompt!

The VVitch scene I mentioned comes just after the baby brother is stolen from under the girl's nose. It's like you are hiding in the Witch's lair watching her ritual. It's dark, vaguely obscene, and extremely creepy!

If you can appreciate a deliberately paced film like The VVitch, as well as creeping dread over jump scares, I can’t recommend TWM enough.

Noroi is a fascinating film that builds its dread by making connections to breadcrumbs dropped all throughout the film. It scared me good enough on first viewing, but it wasn’t until my second that all the pieces fell together and my timbers really got shivered.

Eggars is a writer/director that I respect and have at least liked all his films, The Lighthouse being the standout imo, but I kind of admire his work from a semi-dispassionate distance, if that makes sense. In other words, I haven’t found myself falling head over heels for any and wanting to watch again. (Yet.)

There is a simple scene in “The Big Heat” (1953) with a coffee pot that I find more impactful than most of the action sequences in blockbusters.

Here's #2. Bear with me. I'll come up with #3 eventually: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1_dBCjnVfQ
