What are some remakes that you actually love?

In the age of remakes, reboots, re-imaginings & all that, can you name remakes that are actually great.

And no, you do not need to have seen the original. It needs to stand on its own. Comparisons aren't necessary.

Here are some of my faves

1. John Carpenter's The Thing (1982)
2. Ocean's 11 (2002)
3. True Grit (2010)
4. Scarface (1983)
5. The Fly (1986)
6. The Departed (2006)
7. Cape Fear (1991)
8. The Mummy 1999)

Wizard of Oz

Psycho (1998) got a lot of criticism but I liked it. Won't go so far as to say I LOVED it, though.

Evil Dead (2013)

reply

I prefer that over the original. Not sure I'd call it a remake though.

The Invisible (2007).
Great soundtrack!

True Lies (1994)

I was like, "WHAT? True Lies is a freaking remake?!"

Just looked it up & apparently, it's a remake of a French film. New information to me.

Excellent film. One of Arnie & also Cameron's best films imo

reply

I just like the movie, not love it. I wanted to show off, I suppose.

reply

It doesn't have to be the best thing ever made. As long as you were entertained.

reply

Thank you.

And without having seen La Totale! I would assume that True Lies is prime example of a film that's superior to the original.

Although I'm not sure some of the politics have dated well (particularly the film's treatment of women), True Lies *is* still a complete blast as a piece of entertainment, with three of the all-time greatest action set-pieces. It might be James Cameron's worst film (if we exclude Piranha II, which he's pretty much disowned), and yet it's *still* a classic of the action genre, and *at the very least* a 4/5 star film.

reply

I have seen La Totale, a low budget movie, and what made it entertaining for me was the comedy. Cameron has never directed a full blown comedy, and alas his emphasis on action - and drafting Arnie, along with a great Jamie Lee Curis - eclipsed the comedy, or blunted it rather.

The Thomas Crown affair. I loved it so much and I prefer that more lighthearted tone to it. More Rom com than drama.
and With all respect to Steve McQueen I liked Pierce Brosnan better in that role.

reply

I like both versions very much, but I don't know whether I like the original or the remake more. They're both clever, glamorous, sexy, enjoyable films, and I wish to fuck Hollywood would make more clever, glamorous, sexy, enjoyable films for grownups.

reply

The original is really good as well.
and we should definitely get more films like that one.

The closest I can think of Is Oceans 11 the remake too.

reply

The Thing (1982) and The Departed (2006) for sure

3:10 to Yuma (2007) as well

The Blob (1988) for an honorable mention

reply

I started 3:10 to Yuma once but didn't get to finish it. Like a decade ago.

Would love to watch it in full one of these days.

reply

The 3:10 to Yuma remake was quite good.

reply

It was.

Always (1989)
