Today we went to the scenic town of Gouda (pronounced How-da).

We went to The Cheese Experience (Gouda is famous for cheese) and I had some Cheese beer 🍺

What does cheese beer taste like?

reply

Not as cheesy as you would imagine - more like a blonde beer.

reply

Please tell me you’ve gone native and are walking around in wooden clogs😆

reply

Not yet. We have plenty of pictures of Miss K sporting them though.

reply

Lol, I'm not sure if cheese beer is for me. Sounds like a strange combination.

Gouda (pronounced How-da).

WAY more gutteral than that. Like coughing up phlegm.

reply

To be fair, it doesn’t taste cheesy at all.

(Gouda pronunciation) Absolutely! I didn’t know how to type the coughing up phlegm sound, lol.

reply

You can have it. I don't care for regular beer. Even though I like cheese, there's no way I'd try cheese beer. 🤷🏻‍♀️

reply

It actually doesn’t taste cheesy - more like blonde beer.

reply

Not being a beer aficionado, I know nothing about blonde beer.

reply

BUT DID YOU HAVE IT WITH BEER CHEESE???

reply

The funny thing is, I actually did, lol.

reply

How could you not!

reply

A marriage made in heaven.

reply

Sounds like the usual wonderful time for the AK67 family. Very nice to read. That beer sounds interesting. Would you ever choose it again over, say, your 4th favorite brew?

When I was last in Holland, mine and my father's passports were stolen on the train out of Skipol airport. Other than that, it was lovely.

reply

Good to see you back!

It wasn’t a bad beer, but it would probably struggle to get into my Top 100.

Sorry to hear about the passports being stolen.

Here’s the first part of the trip if you’re interested: -

When there, I had the son of the head of the Christian Artists Convention teach me how to say "Hands up, this is a robbery" in Dutch. Sadly I do not remember how to twist my brain to say it any longer so I cannot extend this tool to you.

Having gone on a smoking hiatus for the trip, it was great to discover that everyone smoked there regardless of religious status. I was known as "The Sneak Smoker." I assume there's less smoking there now. See much? And in which of the countries you have visited was there the most smokers?

reply

Handen omhoog, dit is een overval?

Yes, much less smoking, which pleases me as a non-smoker.

reply

I recall it having more words. Perhaps they were teaching me how to say "Please take my pants. I'm an idiot"

reply

Lol, I'm sure they were. Did it have "neuken in in de keuken" somewhere in there?

reply

Though my memory is excellent, the words were too alien for me to retain these 30+ years later. I can remember every face there though. I partied pretty hard at that Christian event.

reply

I partied pretty hard at that Christian event.

Hmm, that almost seems like a contradiction. Another theme to consider for my next basement session!💥

reply

I happily discovered that European Christians liked to smoke and drink. However, the entire event seemed seeded with people just wearing the skin of religion in order to peddle their goods. Mostly a music festival.

... but actually not too different from many US Christians. I'm a pastor's kid. There were at least 15 people from my church that I regularly got drunk and high with. They all had genuine faith; just no hangups on social issues. Like me.

reply

You could be right. I think the one girl in my school that was very reigious also had no problem smoking and drinking.

reply

There is less smoking now, but I’d say more than in ‘Sunny’ Bournemouth.

SE Asia has a heavy smoking problem, especially Indonesia 🇮🇩 where my wife comes from.

reply

It's called Schiphol, but we like to call it Shithole.

reply

The lads at the US embassy seemed to share that regard.

reply

I'm glad to hear you still had a good time, though. 👍

reply

Very interesting as always! My wife is from Ukraine, but spent some time in The Netherlands before we got married...very interesting country, IMO.

reply

Without wanting to get into politics, this must be a very stressful time for your wife.

I was just going to organise a lads weekend in Kiev when it all kicked off and I was joking that if we’d have gone, Sky News would be reporting on a group of Brits, shacked up in a pub, in the middle of a war zone, drinking beer and refusing to leave (sorry, I shouldn’t make light of such things).

reply

No problem and no apology needed. I got to visit Kiev on one of my trips to Ukraine and it was such a neat city, IMO. It reminded me a lot of Chicago here in the U.S.

My wife is still in contact with family/friends there...but we don't know anything more than what anyone else does regarding the war. It really saddens me to see the damage in Kiev, for example...such beautiful architecture and buildings there (and especially Odessa, where my wife is from). I think most of the fighting has mostly been in the eastern part of Ukraine, which is more "industrial" in nature. But it's a very sad situation for my wife and her family.

reply

I've been to Russia, but always wanted to go to Yalta and up until a few years ago Black Sea cruises stopped there, but unfortunately, no longer and I will probably never get there

Not yet, but they sell it in the souvenir shop in Gouda.

reply

I’ll probably end up buying a load of Heineken cheese as souvenirs for my friends: -

I think they’ll like them (seeing as they all like beer and regular trips to Amsterdam).
