Your thoughts on Subway restaurants?

I stopped eating their subs awhile ago. I find it makes my stomach feel weird, and I feel bad & gross afterwards. Maybe it's because I'm in my 30s now, and my metabolism isn't what it used to be when I was younger?

They started going downhill really fast during the pandemic. We used to get Subway all the time and they were delicious, but during the lockdowns they always had problems with the food and lack of staff. Our location was closed half the time. When they were open, they always seemed to be short of various ingredients. We just stopped going there and now we split our sandwich purchases between Jimmy John's, Jersey Mike's and Firehouse, sometimes McAlister's, but they are too far from our house. Too bad, because Subway used to be just as good as any of them, conveniently located, and the sandwiches were larger and cheaper.

Definitely! I'll add Capriotti's. Never been to a McAlister's.

I think you are being generous calling them "restaurants".

Stopped eating there years back. Their meats taste and look manufactured, the lettuce is always old looking. Nothing special about them at all.

reply

I used to like Subway, but last time I had one I found myself not enjoying it as much I used to and it tasted a bit yucky and unhealthy.

reply

I have definitely noticed this too. I enjoyed them when I was younger. But recent years, it's made me feel gross and unhealthy after I eat it afterwards.

Subway is very middling.

The bread is garbage and the meats and cheeses are bottom shelf fodder.

The Italians and Jews run proper Delis around here in New York, we don’t need Subway around here. Pizza Hut can fuck off too, this ain’t the Midwest.

Despite all the issues with fast-food, nothing beats McDonald's French fries.

reply

Yes, those fries are great.

Wendy’s and Five Guys have better burgers😃

reply

WTF is "Five Guys"? We don't get those in Canada.

It’s a burger chain, they have about 1,700 hundred storefronts all over the world. I’m pretty sure there are a bunch of Five Guys in Canada but I know Canada is really big…you may not have one near you.

They dice the potatoes and broil the beef patties right in front of you, they give you toasted peanuts while you wait, it takes a few minutes to get your order.

The milkshakes are pretty good while you wait and I don’t know anyone that can finish their large fries.

reply

Interesting. I just looked it up and there actually a few of them in Vancouver, BC (the nearest big city to where I am).

Weird restaurant name though.

Rank them:

Five Guys or Sonic or White Castle or Jack In The Box?

Five Guys really is best, all fresh ingredients cooked right in front of you👍

like a lot of others are saying, i stopped going years ago, something seems different, it's not quiet as good as it was 10-15 years ago.

and the mark-ups are insane. if you think how little they must pay for the ingredients to make one sandwich, we're talking about a few cents, yet the sandwich i normally order now costs 10 bucks.

there are real italian delis, and it's a sandwich, how hard is it to buy good bread, cut it and fill it with things?

i think subway has it's days numbered.

Occasionally I will watch several episodes of this, imo, very interesting series https://moviechat.org/tt10098248/The-Food-That-Built-America. Did so again yesterday.

reply

I recommend it, too. I really like this particular style of documentary, which combines narration, commentary by historians, and actors portraying the people.

reply

Yeah, it's often very eye-opening with the information it imparts. A recent favorite episode was where I discovered Dave Thomas, the founder of the Wendy's burger chain had been a protege of Harlan Sanders, the creator of Kentucky Fried Chicken and actually the brainchild behind the iconic 'bucket of chicken.' He was swindled by the unscrupulous businessmen who bought out Sanders and it was in the aftermath of that failure that Wendy's came about.

The last time was about 14 years. I do not miss it!
