Is it "crazy" to talk to yourself?

I do this when I get stressed out. I've had family members at home noticed, and they mention that it's odd. I do this because it serves as a mental release or outlet to vent out my frustrations and stress. I don't like building all that shit in my mind.

Also, I've had comments at work that I sometimes pace back and forth alot and it annoys coworkers. They tell me "What is wrong with you?" or "Stop that! It's annoying!". Again, pacing is a habit of mine when I get stressed out and symptom of my anxiety. I didn't realize it could bother people.

Same way with nail-biting, I do this alot when I'm stressed or frustrated.

Anyone else can relate? Any habits you do when you have a lot in your mind?

No, not crazy. I sort of do it myself - usually I'm day dreaming and just start talking aloud - so strictly speaking I'm not talking to myself - I'm talking to the other person in my daydream - is that better or worse?

reply

That doesn’t sound good, lol.

My girlfriend and I once came home to her place from a night out during the holidays. I was kind of wound up, went into her bathroom to take a piss, and mumbled to myself, somewhat reliving the night. When I came out she asked, "Who were you talking to in there?" I responded with a mock, serious expression, "Have you ever seen the movie The Sixth Sense?" She innocently responded, "Yes." Maintaining the mock seriousness, I then replied, "I see dead people." It took a second for it to register and then she pummeled me with a pillow from her couch.😆

I'll take: "Things That Never Happened" for $100, Alex.

Coming from one of the 'blackest pots', worst liars on this board, but then it makes sense that a compulsive liar wouldn't be able to recognize the truth when he encounters it.😏

You're the same guy who says they get along well with specific users, but those same people will tell me otherwise in a DM. Either you're lying, or delusional.

reply

If that's true, then those people are incredibly two-faced and chickenshit, but having a good sense of the people I do get along with here, I'd say you're the audacious liar.

Talking aloud actually helps you sort through things. If you're an inventor and practice explaining your invention as though you are pitching it, it will help you understand it better, even problem solve on the fly.

But talking to yourself in mumbles etc is crazy and should be avoided.

I sometimes gee myself up, “C’mon! Hurry up!”

Or, if I’m faffing about, I’ll scold myself with a, “What are ya doing?!”

But that’s about it.

I talk to myself all the time, but not around other people. I'm a one man shop, so no coworkers. When I was studying in school, I would drill myself using a cassette recorder to record a question spoken by me, then an adequate pause space, then the answer spoken by me. Then I would alternate the order by fast-forwarding and rewinding so it wasn't all the same questions in the same order. This really helped when I was working at a grocery store and had to memorize codes for produce.

I still have that cassette recorder. I won it in a Christmas lottery when I worked in the university cafeteria.

I think that it's fairly normal to talk to oneself.

reply

No it isn't, you idiot!
