things you notice from watching movies from the 1950s

people went out for dinner at 9pm on a work night?
people would have some kind of breakdown no matter the age (usually a woman) and would prescribed bed rest for weeks or months.

reply

Apparently black people didn't exist in America.

reply

Oh they were there. But because everything was filmed in black and white back then, they just sorta blended into the background.

reply

Lots of characters smoked.

reply

Hats
Uniformed bartenders, cab drivers
Secretaries

reply

Elevator operators.

reply

All the men wore suits and wore hats.

reply

It is true that men without hats didn’t come around until the 80s.

reply

Ta-Daa! 🤣👍

Even to the movies or a ball game.

ESPN was showing some old footage of the first Super Bowl (1967) which included shots of the crowd. I was amazed at the number of guys wearing shirts and ties at the event.

What a contrast to what you see today when fans are shown. Too many people dress like slobs.

reply

Look at some old NHL hockey games. The refs used to wear ties too!

reply

Interesting. People took more pride in their appearances back then.

reply

I don't care what people look like at sporting events. Most NFL fans are wearing jerseys these days, so at least it's somewhat of a "uniform" dress code (pun intended)!

What bugs me is when people walk onto an airplane wearing sweats, basketball shorts, or flip-flops. I'm in my 50's and I used to wear a sport coat flying in the 90's. (doubled as a ticket-holder LOL). I think going to church, dinner, and flying we should try to dress decent, i.e. Business Casual. Seems that weddings and funerals are about all people are willing to dress up for. I had a manager from work that went to my church and showed up in sweatpants. Granted he had to wear a suit M-F, so weekends he relaxed, but what a joke. People never would've guessed that he was an IT manager.

A Catholic priest used to plead with our congregation to at least please dress as nicely as you would to go out to a nice restaurant. Is that too much to ask? In his opinion, the meal here was much more satisfying!

This is what I mean by lack of pride in ones appearance. You see this in stores and restaurants, too. One time I saw a woman at Wendy's wearing pajamas with a coat over them. This was at around 11:00 am, the lunch hour. She looked like she had just rolled out of bed... her hair was uncombed and she must have figured she didn't need to get dressed, just throw on a coat.

"Flip-flops" are hideous and are intended for wear at a pool or the beach only.

I wouldn't expect someone to don formal wear to go to a fast-food place. But come on, people! Display some dignity when you go out in public. And remember... others have to look at you while they are eating.

reply

OK you got me started.

We were at a higher-end restaurant on the Oregon coast this summer (average $30 entrees), guy sitting there at a table wearing a fucking baseball hat. I can't imagine that would be tolerated at a Ruth Chris. I've seen signs at some finer restaurants for gentlemen to remove their caps.

Lucky for me I was not trashed, or I would've said something and probably gotten my ass kicked outside!

reply

Folks really don't even dress up for church anymore? I haven't been a regular churchgoer for over forty years, but I would never have guessed that... I always wear a sport coat when I fly(as you pointed out, it's a handy spot to store your tickets!)

reply

I can only speak for the Catholic church. Lots of shorts in the summer, and jeans the rest of the time.

reply

Historical accuracy was considered to be unacceptable for a Hollywood film, even in the tiniest details.

reply

This reply is accurate!! 😂😂

reply

bios back then seemed to be loosely based

reply

All the wiminz screaming reactions were very fake and over-the-top.

reply

Wow, typical male response.

there were no karens back then. 😊

Every guy dressed way better than me. Even the gas pump guy had a bow tie and pressed pants!

I walk around like a slob all day, I’ve got a hunting jacket, a stretched out t-shirt, dirty old jeans and muddy boots on my feet.

I’d sure like to dress like those fellas in old time movies👍

reply

I too am a jeans and T-Shirt person but I like the old suites they wore with the baggy, high waisted trousers and long loose, exaggerated shouldered jackets - I'd look like a square box in one but at least it would be comfortable.

reply

How beautiful most of the women looked and how old a lot of the men looked (more "mature," for lack of a better word).

reply

non stop cigarette smoking might have had something to do with the premature aging.

reply

Yes, I think that's true. A lot of those guys were hard drinkers also.
