Did You Ever Buy An Album b/c of a Single?

I haven't. If I liked a band, then I'd try to go chronologically, unless something was on sale. I once bought a Beatles single (Free As a Bird/Christmas Time Is Here Again) for my uncle, but it seemed like compilation tapes were cheaper, since in the mid-late 90s (when I started collecting) there was no guarantee that even a popular band like The Doors or Pink Floyd would have all (or close) their studio albums, and a Greatest Hits was more economical, but I can't even think of a time I bought an album because of any song I heard on the radio.

All the time - I have tens of thousands of albums.

Impressive! What's your ratio between singles and full albums?

reply

My guesstimate: -
7” singles - 7000
12” singles - 2000
CD singles - 1000
Vinyl albums - 10000
CD albums - 10000

So 2/1 in favour of albums.

That’s a lot of vinyl and cds! I bet your music room is huge.

reply

The Vault basically looks like a record shop / comic shop; everything is in alphabetical and chronological order.

reply

Damn, that’s impressive!

I have something similar but substantially smaller…about 350 vinyl records, 12 white half sized boxes of comic books and a carton of D&D stuff.

The comics are organized but the records are not, that could be a rainy day project eventually.

reply

Once they're in order it's easy to find stuff.

reply

I’m sure I have years ago. I don’t buy albums anymore though.

reply

No, I always bought music based on the band’s past material, never a single. Truth be told I got so loyal to some rock acts that I’d buy their music even if I heard it was only so-so.

When I was a really little kid my babysitter was a very attractive young woman who was all about Metal. She was into Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and so on. She turned me on to Metal and rock for a lifetime. She was shapely and tall and black, I can still see her pretty eyes but I forget her name. She was probably very sexy but I was only 6 or 7 at the time and couldn’t process that thought.

She’d say ‘listen to this song and don’t tell your parents I played it for you.’

I sure hope that beautiful woman is still rocking out there somewhere, she was something else!

I used to do that all the time. I have more than a few albums I only purchased because one song and only liked that one song after listening to the album. Ha.

many times back in the 80s

reply

The bulk of my vinyl collection is 12” singles with a a very small percentage of albums mixed in. Other than a few artist, I’d say most of the albums I’ve bought were because of a single I heard.

reply

I did in the past and fortunately, most of the time I found I liked most of the songs on the album. I can't remember the last time I actually bought physical media. I borrow CDs from the library and rip them to my computer if I like them.

compilation albums with other singles
