Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Tae Guk Gi (2004)
Midway (1976)
The Guns of Navarone (1961)
Das Boot (1981)

reply

I still haven't seen "Das Boot" but have had it recommended to me a few times.

reply

I would say if you like war films then it is absolutely essential. If you are planning on giving it a viewing, I hope you haven’t read up on it too much.

reply

I love Red Dawn (1984) but it’s a war that never happened, maybe it would fit better on a list with films like Starship Troopers and Edge Of Tomorrow?

reply

I thought about that and several of mine are that way. The Wild Geese also takes place in a fictitious country and The Guns of Navarone never existed either, but at least the war it is set in did.

A list of less literal war films might be interesting as well.

reply

Yeah, I couldn't think of a title for such a list.

reply

If thats the criteria then "Where Eagles Dare" has to be up there

reply

Definitely a great one. I would also include Dark of the Sun (1968). There is a long list of Macaroni Combat films that I rewatch often that would be high on a more light hearted war film list.

reply

Zulu
Saving Private Ryan
Apocalypse Now
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon
Downfall
Waterloo
Dunkirk
The Great Escape
The Guns of Navarone

reply

If these list would have been longer I would have included Zulu and Downfall.

reply

There’s plenty of newer films I probably forgot about. This years All Quiet on the Western Front is really good, The Captain (2017), The Forgotten Battle (2020) and April 9th (2015) are all good recent films too.

reply

The Forgitten Battle looks interesting.

reply

The Captain is the best from that list, it's about a young German private impersonating an Officer during the last days of WWII in Europe, it’s frightening how people can react towards rank.

reply

Adding it to my list now. 👍

reply

Land of Mine (2015) is on my list, it's supposed to be very good.

reply

The Dam Busters
The Cruel Sea
Lawrence of Arabia
Ice Cold in Alex
A Bridge Too Far
Zulu
Reach For The Sky
Sink The Bismark!
Dunkirk (1958)
The Battle of Britain

reply

A few that haven't been mentioned...

We Were Soldiers (2002)
Bat*21 (1988)
1918 (2019)

reply

It’s 1917. We Were Soldiers is an excellent war movie also.

reply

My favourite genre!

Black Hawk Down
The Thin Red Line
Saving Private Ryan
Platoon
My Way
The Unknown Soldier (2017)
We Were Soldiers
13 Hours
The Front Line
The Forgotten Battle

reply

the longest day
the cruel sea
all quiet on the western front
saving private ryan
platoon
paths of glory
patton
casablanca
the dirty dozen
sargent york

reply

darn it! I forgot The Longest Day - that's one of my favourites too.

reply

The Thin Red Line
Platoon
The Beast
The 9th Company
Lebanon
The Bridge Over the River Kwai
Black Hawk Down
Apocalypse Now
The Pianist
Dunkirk

This is a hard question because its one of my favorite genres, so I could add and omit many movies, but #1 is definitely The Thin Red Line for me.

reply

I was disappointed by The Thin Red Line because it was so far from the book. But that was a long time ago now and I should probably give the film another go.

reply

Did you read the whole James Jones series? I just finished Whistle the other month. From Here to Eternity is by far the best one.

reply

I did. It was a long time ago now but I stumbled on the fact there was a trilogy and enjoyed it. I like James Jones but the last book of his I started defeated me. Got about half way through Some Come Running and put it down - just didn't like the characters I think.

reply

I'd love to see a remake of From Here to Eternity. I think the original came out in the 50's, shortly after the book.

reply

Perhaps they could get away with it now - the film is not as famous as it once was and the TV remake long forgotten.

reply

Apparently the Thin Red Line was made into a movie as well back in the 60's. I took a look at the trailer, but it didn't peak my interest enough to watch.

reply

Battleground (1949)
Twelve O'Clock High (1949)
The Dam Busters (1955)
The Enemy Below (1957)
Run Silent, Run Deep (1958)
The Guns of Navarone (1961)
In Harm's Way (1965)
The Devil's Brigade (1968)
Patton (1970)
Glory (1989)
and yes, I do own these films on either DVD or Blu-ray
