Charles M. Schulz tribute

Creator of the Peanuts comic strip. He would have been 100 years old today (born November 26, 1922). A lot of cartoonists are doing tributes; some are listed here:

I just watched A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving earlier this week and am looking forward to my annual viewing of A Charlie Brown Christmas in December.

ME TV is showing Snoopy, Come Home (1972) on Sunday, November 27, 2022.

I am one of the few people who didn't grow up with Peanuts. No comics, shows, movies. Nothing.

reply

I saw the TV specials before the comic strip because the local newspaper didn't carry it.

reply

I recall a Thanksgiving special being advertised on TV once, but I never saw it. I think it's more an American thing.

reply

I saw the Off-Broadway play in the late 1960s, when I was a kid. I recall liking it but not much else. Of course I liked the comic strip. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You%27re_a_Good_Man,_Charlie_Brown

I think it’s so cool that so many well known cartoonists took time out to pay tribute.

reply

Such a nice thing to do, to honor someone who was in the same business that they're in.

I lived in Santa Rosa, CA in 2000 and 2001 when I worked for Agilent. That was his hometown and they named the small airport after him.

reply

I guess it depends on what you define as "hometown." He was born in Minneapolis in 1922, and grew up in St Paul. Three of his four children were born in Minnesota, but yes, he moved to California in 1958. He moved to Santa Rosa in 1969. I don't say these things to detract from Santa Rosa, where he lived most of his life. Just wanted to clarify that Minnesota can "claim" him, too.
Cheers. πŸ₯‚

Schulz grew up in Minnesota but spent a couple of years in Needles, California (1929-1931), then returned to Minnesota and remained there until 1958. That's how he came up with the idea of Snoopy's brother Spike living in the desert.

Grew up loving the specials. But I was a TV junkie. I would comb the TV Guide for any monster movies, sci-fi, or cartoons.

I rarely found the strip to be funny. Sometimes it would be cool though. I would always read it.

My favorite Peanuts bit is when Snoopy embarks on a WWI ace pilot fantasy.

His mother was Scandinavian like me, even if she was Norwegian and not Swedish.
I grew up with three of the "Charlie Brown" specials on VCR tapes.

reply

My great-grandparents on my father's side were born in Sweden.
