Edit: You can amend your initial post through clicking the edit link instead of needlessly bumping the topic with what appears to be a transparent attempt to evade the board posting guidelines against trolling/political posting by shoehorning it into a comment rather than the original post.
And???? I didn't post that on there. I came across it on Reddit and decide to post it here. It's a harmless question.
shareIf your original intent is so harmless and in good faith, then delete your post below and move it up to the OP.
Here is how someone sincere might respond: "Oh, sure, good point. I'll do that."
Here is how someone with disingenuous motives might respond: "No, I will not admit that I'm aware of the contentious nature of my opinion and am going to leave the post be in hopes that this entire topic not be deleted on a technicality."
Some of these are really good, especially about sequels.
shareI noticed I didn't list any in my OP.
Imma say when they push for a LGBTQ character to try to "diversify" or fulfill some "quota". It just comes off cringy. Nothing against the LGBTQ community though.
Usually any movie with no name actors and a no name director will likely be awful.
I still check a lot of them out but often turn them off 15 minutes in because they are garbage.
Also…
Low budget ‘found footage’ movies often tend to be terrible.
Most recent slasher films have been derivative, poorly acted and boring as well.
Damn near anything considered a ‘Rom-Com’ usually bores me to near death.
‘Oh wow, this guy and this Lady annoy each other endlessly but they like to screw and they’ll make it work somehow…’
Welcome to life.
Rom-Com movies are super boring.
When the filmmakers use the orange and teal color scheme.
Edit: I meant this to be a response to OP.
Narration at the front telling, not showing. Bla bla bla. Just get on with the movie.
If rather read a text screen for the setup.
I know I know, there are a couple movies where it works, but generally, narration is a bad thing
If it's a reboot or reimagining you know you're probably in for a bumpy ride. Also when the best parts of the film are in the trailer.
shareNightmare On Elm Street and Friday The 13th we’re weak remakes but I really enjoyed Rob Zombie’s version of Halloween, and the True Grit and the recent remake of All Quiet On The Western Front were both really good.
Maybe if the story is there a competent Director can retell a story pretty well.
The first check is if there is any wit involved, if the characters are engaging, the pace draws you in or is intriguing enough to keep you around for a while. There is some art in how to start a story - a lot of bad movies lack that, which is a blessing since you can jump off quick.
I usually sniff out a bad movie within a few minutes. But reserve the right to bail if I figure out later.
Most netflix movies are bad - for me, anyway - contrived, awkward/stilted/fake/pretentious dialogue, half-witted or loathsome characters presented as someone to take seriously, dumb/loud/over-bearing music - lots of things that can mar the experience, they generally use most of them.
"The feelgood movie of the year", or "what critics are calling..." tend to be pretty good indicators for me.
