Maybe a lot of people just think of Vietnam as a 60s thing. But no.

Summer of 1971. I am 12 years old, spending my one and only summer ever at a Summer Camp. At some point that summer there was a draft lottery. One of my counselors, who IIRC was 18, got a very, very low number, meaning he almost certainly was going to be drafted. I never knew his fate.

I vividly remember that lottery because of how I had lucked out with a high number. I felt sure I was going to have to go after registering because I had been classified as 1-A. My dad was a two-tour veteran who came home alive both times but by then, I had attended the funerals of a couple of upperclassmen who hadn't been as fortunate. It was a time of constant angst for me until I got that notice.

When I think "70s" I can't help but think of this classic film...

Love 70s Elvis

Though early 70s Elvis is better. He was in fine form 1973 Hawaii show. But he looks pretty bloated here. I think this was near the end.

His early 70s shows at the International Hotel (later Hilton) in Vegas are legendary.
