Does good and evil even exist?

As in literally or is it how we define it and we make it, cheers.

reply

Totally!

reply

Seriously, it is clear to me that what is seen as good or evil is very subjective.
There are different rules to follow in different cultures.

reply

Yes. Good and evil exist.

But good people do evil things and bad people do good things, nothing about it is simple.

reply

Ted Bundy savagely murdered dozens of young women. He was an evil man. And yet he once saved a little boy from drowning and volunteered at a suicide prevention hotline so your point makes sense.

The guy still deserved what he got though.

reply

And good kind, loving people spoil and smother their children as an expression of love, causing the kids to grow up to be neurotic, dysfunctional messes.

reply

True but I have trouble thinking of lousy parenting skills as being evil, it seems more like ignorance or emotional immaturity. In my opinion evil involves bad intent.

If instead of spoiling the child the parent was physically and sexually abusing the child, that would be evil because that involves bad intent.

reply

Harming others on purpose is evil. Holocaust for example.

reply

Ah, but the Nazis still managed to convince numerous people at the time that the Holocaust was a good idea.
So what is good and what is evil is very complicated.

reply

I don't believe the people needed to be convinced. Anti-Semitism, other bigotry, scapegoating and poor economic conditions already existed within the population. They only needed a leader.

reply

Yes, you're right.
But I guess that this only further proves my point that good vs evil is a very complex issue.

reply

Yes it does. I was around 11 when I heard this story. I didn't talk for about 4 days after, my mom was really worried.

August 28, 1984, 18-year-old Elisabeth Fritzl went missing. Elisabeth Fritzl spent 24 years in captivity, confined to a makeshift cellar and repeatedly tortured at the hands of her own father Josef Fritzl.

reply

Okay, Fritzl is proof that some people will be messed up no matter what.

reply

Jeez, I never heard of this but I looked it up. Horrible story.
‘Dad’ is 87 and he’s going to die in prison, so that’s something I suppose…

reply

"Dad" has dementia. He was transferred to a regular prison where he's eligible for parole either this year or next.

The poor daughter and their six surviving kids will need to look over their shoulder if he's freed. Tragic.

reply

Disgusting.
I have a real problem with these early ‘mercy releases.’

Think about it. We’re all of us headed for dementia, a heart condition, cancer, lupus, strokes and a hundred damn other things that kill the lot of us in the end…But none of us are killers, rapers or arsonists.

These animals should walk into the cell and leave toes up.

‘Dementia?’ Let him talk to the bricks and bars ‘til nature does it’s work.

reply

The way I define it, it's pretty concrete. "Evil" is simply harm done to an individual without their consent. "Good" is anything that functions correctly. "Altruism" is helping someone when it puts you in disadvantage or danger. Making concepts like this simple is extremely useful.

reply

Well, they're human concepts. They aren't cosmic laws or physical objects. They don't exist external to human beings, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. If that's what you mean.

reply

Just post your essay already.
