Who was supposed to be the next big actor (for better or for worse). But never happened?

For the longest time you could have said this about Anthony Mackie until fairly recently.

Terrance Howard

Fairuza Balk, although she kinda self sabotaged.

Lisa Bonet, I guess her daughter picked up the mantle.

Joel Kinnamen

Technically The Rock in terms of action stars, because he never got that signature iconic starring role yet imo.

Iko Iwais, maybe it's the language barrier? Same with Tony Jaa

Donny Yen, he had to move back to China to become a big star.

Derek Luke

Kerry Washington

Kadeem Hardison

Sam Worthington was less a rising star and more like a teacher's pet being shoved down your throat by Hollywood. But his career never really took off regardless.

Paula Patton. Like wtf happened there??

reply

I FEEL LIKE SAM ROCKWELL IS ONE OF THE BEST DUDES WORKING BUT ALWAYS STAYS BELOW THE SURFACE.

reply

Chris Hemsworth... he's almost there though.

Luke Hemsworth on the other hand, has been largely forgotten already.

reply

Chris needs to establish himself outside of Thor. Not that I think he would care much. He’s made the money.

reply

Or Marvel give his character a new Twist.

We already had serious fish out of water Thor- in Thor 1 and the dark world.

Semi serious Thor on Infinity War

Clown Thor in Ragnarock, Endgame and Thor Love and thunder

Maybe if we have Thor 5 a new director could give the character a new Tone and give Chris Hemsworth an acting challenge still portraying Thor.
I really believe superhero films can still be rich acting expirences for actors, especially with the MCU how it’s treating the franchise as a big series. Happening on the big screen.
Tony Stark and Steve Rogers had very interesting arcs. In the same way great characters from your favorite tv series.

Thor needs new tricks but I can see it be a great acting role for Chris Hemsworth just toning down the humor a little bit.

reply

Also, three actors that remind me of each other, both in physical appearances and career trajectories...

Orlando Bloom, JGL and Kit Harrington.

reply

Is there an echo in here, or are you just a little attention whore?

I’m going with #2.

reply

IMO, no one. You've got three greats out there now - two of them are female.

Denzel, Frances McDormand and Meryl Streep

Another great passed in 2014 - Philip Seymour Hoffman

I don't know of anyone current that is even close to these people. Even if they were supposed to be the next great (or big actor as the OP said).

reply

In your opinion no one was supposed to be the next big actor but never happened?

reply

Well, let me put it this way - if there was someone that was supposed to be the "next big actor" - they didn't succeed.

reply

That's the question. Who are those "they" that once had that hype, or showed that promise, but didn't succeed. You're just reiterating that they didn't. Who?

reply

When Winona Ryder and Christian Slater first came out (late 80s) - they were supposed to be the next big time actors. If we go back to the early to mid 80s - you've got the entire brat pack. Ally Sheedy and Judd Nelson in particular because they were the members of the pack that supposedly were going to be the next greats. In the 90s, probably TOm Sizemore. In the 00s - the one guy I can think of that had quite a bit of hype, and maybe in fact has had a pretty decent career - is Tom Hardy. However, I do not consider to him to be one of the greats. In the 1970s, Jan Michael Vincent was the next big thing. He was expected to have a fantastic career. It ended up being mediocre at best.

reply

Yes, exactly. Next "big actor" isn't the same as saying someone was expected to win multiple Oscars like Streep, Washington, and McDormand.

reply

Devon Sawa

reply

You seem to think that the question is something different than it is.

reply

I know what you mean. After 2000 there really isn’t many with that classic star power. Even Denzel started before 2000.

A lot of actors since 2000 have their moment and the fade.
