Unequivocally yes.

Of course. A car can get up to 30C/86F hotter than the actual weather, so it's pretty dangerous to leave a kid in a car for any amount of time, let alone a full school day. I mean, you shouldn't be leaving your child unattended anywhere for that long, let alone a small box with windows for any creep to come along and see into.

Well not being a parent it’s not place to say for sure but common sense tells me that leaving a child in a car with no ventilation on a hot day is a pretty ordinary choice for any parent. It may not be intentional but it’s certainly neglectful.

How is this not Involuntary manslaughter?

In this particular case - probably not. There should be an investigation to see if there is a history of neglect or possibly a medical condition affecting the mother. But this sounds more like a tragic accident - admittedly a very hard one to understand but these paragraphs from the article are interesting.

A 2019 study found six children died unattended in hot cars between 2013 and 2018 in Canada. The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Toronto and the Hospital for Sick Children, said it was the first to document those deaths in the country.

In the U.S., an average of 37 children die each year due to being left in a hot car, the study noted. A little over half of those cases are due to a caregiver unintentionally leaving a child behind because of stress, fatigue, or routine changes.

“Experts believe that under the right circumstances, forgetting an infant or child in the back seat could happen to anyone,” the study said.

This happened in Cincinnati about 6 years ago - the mother was also a teacher. I have forgotten exactly why she forgot about her child, but she did.

I honestly don't understand how anyone could let this happen and yes, there should be some kind of accountability. The article mentions that under the right circumstances this could happen to anyone and to that all I can say is - BS.

reply

Yes, I really don't understand how someone can be so distracted that they don't think of their child for hours.

reply

I don’t think temperature should even matter. You don’t leave a 2 year old in the car for 6-7 hours.
