Women and Comedy

I don't agree that "women aren't funny," I think most (actually) intelligent women can be pretty funny in conversation. But I asked myself the other day, what female stand up comedian would I pay fifty bucks to see an hour long show from and I could not think of one female stand up comedian I think would hold my attention that long.

Who is a female comedian today who doesn't go for laughs by only talking about her vagina?

To be fair, vaginas can be quite funny. Not that I’m an expert on them or anything 🤔

Have you seen the British show Live At The Apollo? There have been many hilarious female stand-ups on that show who are routinely funny and have all different styles of comedies and topics. It’s a fun show, I’d recommend checking it out.

I know there are some funny women in comedy, and a vagina joke isn't a bad thing, it's just when the comedians spotlighted by the mainstream media rest their entire routines on the fact that they're women it gets a little tiresome. I will check out that show.

I love women, yet almost never laugh at women comedians, but I keep trying them on. I know many other guys that feel the same way. We don't HATE them, they just are never humorous to many of us.

That said, the ONLY female that I have ever gone back and rewatched her specials a couple times now, is Ellen Degeneres. TRULY, not a fan of her AT ALL, yet her delivery and wacky twists catch me off guard and I find pretty funny.

I suspect this is all based on your basic sexist physics. Sort of in the realm of, we would USUALLY not have much confidence in a female mechanic. It's just how it is.

There were a couple others I saw on youtube - short clips - I laughed a little at, but they were very unknown names and I can't even remember them now. They were talking about sex and relationships (yes, again), and made some decent jokes.

I'm the same. I can't think of a female stand-up who has ever made me laugh. As opposed to actresses who can very successfully do comedy roles, of which there are many.

But Ellen Degeneres is a lesbian so does that really answer the OP's question. She doesn't represent all women. Are there any heterosexual women?

Tig Notaro probably. I don't recall her ever saying vagina jokes.

reply

I'm not dismissing vagina jokes altogether, just as the focus of someone's act. I bring that up because I tried a few of the specials on netflix and it seemed like the ones I watched were all focused on bodily functions. And again, nothing wrong with that, but I'd like to see woman comics talk about existence, the meaning of life, stuff that everyone in the audience can relate to.

Lisa Lampanelli could kill
I haven’t seen her lately though

They only allow liberal women with no class to be comedians these days. Anybody who has to resort to making jokes about their private body parts is not someone you can really respect, because they honestly are gutter trash and have no real material to work with.

I like Rita Rudner (not nearly as funny as e.g., Eddie Murphy in Delirious and Raw though), and I have a friend who's funny (not as funny as her older brother though).

And I wouldn't pay $50 to hear trumpets sounding and angels sing a fargin' hymn.

I can't think of a woman doing stand-up that is funny, some are mildly amusing, but Judi Dench is hilarious in comedies.

I think Julia Louis-Dreyfus was hilarious in Seinfeld, but I've never seen her do stand up comedy.

reply

Tracey Ullman is funny.
