Favorite drummer?

I don’t know much about drummers but a guitarist friend of mine in the 80s told me the guy from Rush was the best.

He's definitely very high on the list. It's always next to impossible for me to consider someone the ultimate "best", which is why I said "one of my favorites" in my OP.

No love for Cozy Powell?

Apparently none for Ringo Starr either, although I saw him hailed as, "one of the best ever" in a recent online article. Go figure. Got to admit, I've seen him as pretty mediocre for a long time now.

I like Ringo and have all his albums, but I’ve never understood the fuss about him as a drummer; he’s competent.

My favorite song for percussion is Paul Simon "Obvious Child."

While looking at some old Gary Brooker (rip) / Procol Harum chatter, I've seen very complimentary mentions of their drummer B J Wilson.

But tbh, I'm always flummoxed as to how to evaluate drummers and musicians in general. Discerning the difference in serving a song and indulging in flash is difficult, so I mostly go by what others say about musicians and their talent.
I loved ELP when I was young and assumed Carl Palmer was just about the best, but from critical acclaim it seems Bill Bruford might actually win out. I hear all kinds of good things about Stewart Copeland, regardless of my feelings about the Police in general. And the list goes on and on. Moon, Bonham, Peart .... Heck, even seeing a clip of Karen Carpenter behind a kit makes me think, wow, she was really good. And maybe she was.
