Strange casting

What movies have you seen that were good despite the poor casting of one of the main characters? I going with Ghost Rider. It was a pretty good movie, but Nicolas Cage even then was too old to play the main character.

This one might stir up hard feelings, but at first glance I thought Leo & Kate were an odd looking couple in Titanic. He looked pre-pubescent and she looked matronly. Of course I have long since got over this initial reaction and embraced this beloved couple.

reply

I'm with you on that. He looked very young compared to Kate. He has filled out since then and actually looks like a man now.

reply

Given his boyish good looks, I thought casting him as J.Edgar Hoover was bizarre but he seemed to pull it off somehow. My barber and I had a serious laugh about that.

reply

Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse was incredibly stupid. He has nowhere near the size to play the character. Should have gone with a big guy like Michael Clarke Duncan (RIP) or a CGI character with a more powerful voice.

Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)
Keanu Reeves in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)

reply

Keane cops a lot for that role. I think his wooden performance suited the stuffy character he was playing.

They could have gotten someone much more attractive and captivating for the role of Mina.

reply

There's a difference between a wooden performance and a dynamic performance as a stuffy/wooden character. I think Reeves just seemed stiff. But it's more than that - his accent is tragic. I like that movie, I even like Keanu Reeves (he's good in films like The Matrix, John Wick, etc.), and I'd even go so far as to say Reeves is a better actor than he gets credit (?) for, but he isn't good in Dracula, and was miscast.

reply

It's a testament to how good the film itself looks that his performance never bothered me that much. Not saying it was great and I'm not a fan of his, I just like the film. Ryder to me is more of a disappointment.

reply

At least Keanu Reeves attempted an English accent, lazy old Kevin Costner just drawled in his American accent like he’d just stepped off from a Western movie set. Both were terrible casting choices, I still enjoy both movies despite them.

reply

I watched Robin Hood recently and couldn't enjoy it anymore. Asides from Alan Rickman having a ball hamming it up I just saw how bad the film is.

Speaking of accents and poor casting Christian Slater speaks as if he's ordering a hot dog on the streets of New York.

reply

Alan Rickman steals that movie, I was rooting for him even if he did cancel Christmas!

reply

It amazes me that it took this long for someone to bring up Reeves in Dracula. Holy Toledo, that was bad casting. Rest of the film is near-perfect casting (maybe not Ryder), but Reeves struggles with every inch of that film.

reply

The ‘highlight reel’ of Keanu’s accent on YouTube are pretty damn funny though

reply

Okay, I could rethink whether or not it's *entertaining*...

William Holden in Picnic (1955)

reply

Really? I had more problems with Kim Novak who seemed to put zero effort into giving Madge a personality.

reply

holden was suppose to be a recent college graduate. he way much too old.

reply

A lot of the women they like casting as tough or action stars don't fit the bill. The recent Charlie's Angel's film had 3 very unlikely women in the roles.

reply

The older two had Drew Barrymore who in no way looks like she could kick ass.

reply

No but at least her films were done in a very fun way.

reply

Sofia Coppola - Godfather Part III.

reply

Awful! How did she get that part🧐

reply

Too bad Winona Ryder dropped out, but even with a better actress in the role it would still remain an average film sadly.

reply

Yep, just a fair to middling way to end a trilogy with two excellent parts …the helicopter attack on The Commission meeting sealed the deal for me, that was really silly, American Mafia wouldn’t do that

Those guys invite the target out for a party or a payoff and someone sits in the back seat…it’s all very quiet

reply

The story sounded much more interesting with Robert Duvall involved, but he quit over salary demands.

reply

I didn’t know about the Duvall trivia, he should have just shown up for old time’s sake

reply

Tom Hagen was going up against Michael Corleone is what I read.

reply

That would have been great drama, this script was a mess

reply

Keanu Reeves in Bram Stoker’s Dracula…Casting should have noticed the ‘English’ accent and politely shown him the door

reply

Not a movie but the TV show Yellowstone and it's soon off 1883. They have actors who are 15 or more years older than the characters they are playing. The actors look much older too which makes it confusing in terms of trying to understand them.
