Who is the best dancer of all time?

Well?

reply

Mikhail Baryshnikov

Sounds Russian

reply

Yep, Russian. Baryshnikov is considered one the best ballet dancers ever.

reply

Very likely the best ballet dancer ever, but we'll never know as nobody alive ever saw Nijinsky and there's no film of him, but ballet isn't the only genre of dance.

Who's the best tap dancer? The best hip-hop dancer? The best jazz dancer? The best Bharatanatyam dancer in India? So maybe Fred Astaire was the best ballroom dancer ever and Baryshnikov is the best ballet dancer ever, how the hell can you compare them.

reply

You make a good point. Asking who is the best dancer is the same as asking what the best movie is or who is the best heavy metal band. You will end up with many different opinions.

reply

Well, it's more like asking who is the best *band*, not the best heavy metal band. I mean, who's a better band - Count Basie's Orchestra, Led Zeppelin,or BTS?

You can't really compare dancers from hugely different genres, you can only enjoy them.

reply

You don't know who Mikhail Baryshnikov is? The only excuse for that is being under 35.

No contest. Gene Gene the Dancing Machine https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=gene+gene+the+dancing+machine

Runner-Up: Ian Bernardo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6e1E8vAAvU

reply

Truly wacky shit whenever Gene Gene was brought on! :D

reply

:)

reply

Ginger Rogers. She could do everything Fred Astaire did but do it backwards.

reply

She danced in high heals too.

reply

Coincidentally because of something I saw trending here recently I looked up who Vernon and Irene Castle were, portrayed by Fred and Ginger in 1939. I suppose they deserve an honorable mention although I still know virtually nothing about them.

And in heels!

😎

reply

Jokes aside, I don't think it can be narrowed down to one.

Baryshnikov, Fred Astaire, Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly, Margot Fonteyn, the list goes on...

reply

The only replies I can make would be jokey ones, like Michael Madsen in Rez Dogs, and I remember Chris Walken doing some dance steps maybe on SNL, and I think he was being conscious about trying to look good at it.
Ted Danson does a little dancing in the movie Body Heat.
A friend of mine may have been named after Dame Alicia Markova, a famous ballerina.

reply

Sam Rockwell

For male ballet Baryshnikov would be my first choice, but.....I do nominate Alexander Godunov as best villain in a Die Hard movie who is also a dancer.

I think it's really difficult to ask who is the best dancer, I mean which type of dancing? There are so many different types of dancing.

reply

It’s a ridiculous question.

reply

Yeah. I just don't mind sharing Godunov's dancing. While he wasn't quite as good as Baryshnikov, he was really good. It's a shame they had a falling out and he was so unhappy in life. I honestly didn't know he was a dancer for the longest time, and I was watching Die Hard and I thought he moved with grace, so I looked him up and bam, there he was, a member of the Bolshoi.

reply

What about Nureyev? I think he was "the guy" just before Baryshnikov appeared. But I don't follow ballet enough to converse about it.

Wasn't Godunov also in Witness?

reply

Yes, and Waxwork II

And I hit submit too soon. My issue with Nureyev as well as Godunov is that I don't like their arms. Godunov's hands irk me more than his arms.

reply

Napoleon Dynomite.
