Questions About the Site and Its Ownership and Maintenance

Who's in charge here? (One person or a team? Are there at least five moderators or have there been one at a time and they are up to 5 or whatever number?)

Does anyone who sends comments or suggestions to the email address ever get acknowledgement?

Is there a reason that among the many boards here, there is not one to discuss maintaining and improving the site?

The message boards are great but the site as a whole needs much to bring it up to IMDb level. As long as this site does not actually copy content from IMDb, Wikipedia or anywhere, surely things such as actor information and credits are not copyrighted and could be included here? A person still has to go to IMDb or Wikipedia for someone's complete credits. Many movies are also not listed for anyone wishing to comment on those.

Is anyone working on improving this site, or do they just remove offensive content from the boards and that's it?

I appreciate any answers before this post gets buried. Maybe I could find it again by searching my own posts, but there is no way to find other posts on the boards once they drop off the first few pages. Thank you very much for your consideration.

reply

Another new guy? πŸ€”

Do you also know "Sophie"?

This site is pretty damned close to "anything goes". Sometimes people get banned for consistently egregious trolling and/or flaming

I dunno how many mods there are, but I assume that they are always lurking

reply

I'm just new to this board. I've been on the site since it was founded (gaining on 1000 posts under this name--I had another name on IMDb--) and continue to praise Jim heavily for founding it. I'm just wondering what's being done in the past five years or so to possibly improve MovieChat.org against competing sites. There were several others at that time but I haven't kept up with them and don't know if they're still around.

Don't know Sophie or anyone else.

reply

As far as I know, nothing has been done to improve the site lol. It has a very old-school feel

I'm fine with it. I come here to get different kinds of perspectives than you would find on popular, highly moderated places like Reddit. The smallness of it gives it almost a village-y feel

My only complaint is that there are legitimate white supremacists/bigots that have found a home here. They don't seem to frequent General Discussion, but they sure do like to ruin the movie pages. You can block those people though, I guess

I don't think they are going out of their way to grow the site much. I think it occupies a certain niche, because realistically it's not like it could even compete with social media sites

reply

The only way to improve this place is if people post great threads.

I do love that this is text-only, and like that there's been no changes, since most of them in general are shitty.

reply

There are only two active mods, Mod4 and Mod5.

The owner (Jim) is barely active and hasn't done anything notable to improve the site in many years. God only knows what will happen if the mods flee!

reply

We remaining Mods are not able to change the site or add to it. Only Jim can do that. We just deal with warnings, removing posts and/or members when required and cleaning up the spam.

You can try sending him suggestions at [email protected] but don't get your hopes up for a reply. He may add any useful features but I don't think he wants it changed much and wants to keep it as is.

reply

Thanks Mod4 I appreciate how truthful and helpful you always have been here. πŸ‘

reply

You're welcome.

reply

Many thanks for your good work. I know it can't be easy.

reply

Thanks.

Some days are worse than others and most is dealing with things that shouldn't have been reported in the first place because it's just someone not agreeing with other's opinion, people still hitting report by accident on their phone or someone posting pirate movie sites.

reply

So we're not supposed to report when someone posting pirate movie sites?

reply

I didn't say that. I was listing what were the most common reports.

reply

We don't need improvements. Improvements to IMDB now mean it takes a minute to load every page.

reply

There are some minor improvements that would be nice like if the director would appear on a film’s page.

reply

Removing politicians from trending has been asked for many times, it would be nice if that were added, lots of minor things like a spell checker, polls, a few more open forums so people would post in them too, have all been asked for before.

A new users forum with a sticky FAQ would be welcome too I think.

reply

Those are all good improvements. One main thing I was hoping is at least to be able to suggest that films omitted from the site be added and find someone capable of doing that, but don't know where to apply if people don't answer emails.

reply

It would sure be nice to get rid of the time limit after each post a person makes that prevents them from posting again. This site doesn't get nearly enough traffic for that to be justified.

reply

Everyone seems to agree on this, it's a weird thing, I just don't see much of anything ever changing here...I'm fine with it, it's a free site with lots of fun posters

Why do I even talk to you?!?

reply

reply

True talk

reply

True, that is an annoyance.

reply

I don't mind it. I mean it's really annoying when playing games, but over the years we've had a few spammers who could have been a lot worse if they hadn't had to wait to post again.

reply

I think that message is often displayed wrongly. A default that really means the site is a bit busy or having a problem.

reply

I would like an answer to these questions as well. A ship needs a captain. So there are only two mods left? Are these two now responsible as co-Admins?

If there is a problem, who do we contact?

For the future maintenance and success of this forum we need answers.

reply

CONTACT UNCLE HOWNOS THE MOLESTER...HE IS THE OLDEST AND WISEST AMONGST US.

reply

Yeah, Hownos is the name I most associate with MovieChat. He appeared to be Nimda's nemesis. And I like to know the power structure before I delve in.

Is Hownos a mod? And if not, why not?

reply

THAT'S THE BEST PART...NOBODY KNOWS WHO THE MODS ARE...UNTIL THEY STRIKE YO ASS...ANYONE COULD BE A MOD...EVEN ME.πŸ™‚

reply

I know Catslug used to be a mod here. If that's the case, it sounds like they'll take anyone. πŸ‘Ή

reply

So, who are you? Really??

reply

Gameboy.

reply

There are people who know who the mods are.

reply

It really should be common knowledge. I don't know what's the big secret. Stand behind what you do and own it. I don't like the anonymity.

reply

I think anonymity is important to modhood.

I just wonder, with all the vitriol on here, what exactly would arouse their wrath?

That said, I appreciate a space on the internet where everyone can speak freely. That's really hard to come by these days.

reply

Well, MovieChat has a rep for banning everyone. Lol.

I mean I'm new here and you know better than I. But guys were always whining on filmboards about being banned here.

When I'm a mod I like everyone to know who I am. If they're anonymous I wonder what they're hiding.

reply

If MovieChat is banning everyone, we all won't be here smh.

reply

Don't you think that a bunch of people who were banned from a website would represent a non-random sample? That's not how you determine a non-biased perspective on something

This place is definitely not ban-happy, unless you're comparing it to places like 4chan. It's a website dedicated specifically to movies and yet VERY LITTLE in-depth film discussion goes on here

Almost every movie page is littered with posts bitching about "wokeness". What film boards do you frequent that consider this place too strict?

reply

I would love to know what those guys were banned for, because based on the amount of vitriolic, off-topic nonsense that permeates moviechat, I have to assume those guys were either threatening physical violence, discussing illegal activities, or stalking other users.

When I'm a mod I like everyone to know who I am.

I don't know you but that really sounds like a power thing. There is no need for us to know the identities of the mods for them to do their job. It would be counterproductive if we did.

reply

It's called accountability. It's about power being open to scrutiny. I just do not see the need for anonymity in moderation.

I'm guessing the mods also post on their regular accounts? I've never posted on another forum where mods were anonymous. They always have a name and are open to dialog.

So far I'm very impressed with this site. Perhaps the complaints I heard on filmboards about frivolous bans were just so much butthurt.

I still would like to know the mods names though. I just don't see the point of stealth in moderation.

reply

The Mod’s names are currently Mod4 and Mod5. As long as you play nice, there shouldn’t be any problem. Just stick to the rules and it’ll be plain sailing.

reply

I'm not always nice. In fact I can be down right ornery sometimes. 😈 But I follow the rules. Being nice and following the rules are two very different things.

reply

I genuinely want to know why those guys were banned lmao.

Before I read your post, I assumed that no one got banned here XD

reply

Well Lara Croft is one of them. You know, the nutty Romanian. I'm not sure what name he uses here. There's some gay named Orson who said he was banned here.

reply

Are you a Romanian too?

reply

I'm pretty sure my last reply to you was deleted by a mod.
I'm now deducing that the mods here are pretty easygoing unless one directs animosity to someone else.

So all in all I think this silent modding is a positive thing. But to be fair, I'm only acquainted with mainstream social media, so I just find this place to be a welcome environment allowing for free speech.

The cases of those you described aside, I hope you enjoy your time here.

reply

THERE ARE PEOPLE...LMAO.

reply

It's a FACT.

Prove me wrong!

reply

One suggestion is there ought to be a form to fill out to submit a movie, actor, director, etc., not listed on the site. The owner or whoever is in charge could check it to make sure it's real and not already listed and then add it if necessary.

reply

Ain't nobody got time for that.

reply

:(

reply

There's a lot of improvements that could be made, don't listen to the naysayers. Your suggestion isn't bad. I've been posting here for over 5 years, so I consider my opinion to be unimpeachable :)

I hope someone answers your emails. Good things usually happen when people actually give a shit

reply

Thanks.

reply

Oh lord Jesus it’s a fire πŸ˜€

reply

If you want to add a new movie/actor/director/etc, just add it to imdb.com first and it will automatically become available on this site later. I am guessing here but that's the way it should be.

reply

I had hoped so but sadly not the case. I wanted to comment on some versions of A Christmas Carol I recently saw, and here's what I found.

Internet Movie Database Title A Christmas Carol exact matches: 100

MovieChat.org Title A Christmas Carol exact matches:
Total which comes up at first: 8
Total which comes up when you hit "See more results": 6

How is "See more results" LESS or do I want to know?

Internet Movie Database Title Scrooge exact matches: 20

MovieChat.org Title Scrooge exact matches: 8
Total which comes up when you hit "See more results": 2

As you can see, something is very wrong here. I didn't get to comment on any versions made before 1935 and I'm not even finding the famous 1938 version here! What's more, I couldn't post in the genre section as there is no section for holiday films. Children and Family would be the closest.

There is one version neither site has listed, that is the 1901. Perhaps Internet Movie Database knew about it and considered it too short (the surviving footage seems to be about six minutes so originally it was probably ten minutes or less) but it was the first filmed version of the story ever. Perhaps they were not aware of it. Of course, since there's no getting through to the soulless heartless machine which is IMDb, it would do no good to tell them even were I inclined to help them in any way. A lot of other early versions are, however, listed there.

reply

Is this the 1938 version you were looking for?

https://moviechat.org/tt0029992/A-Christmas-Carol

reply

Yes, thanks, I guess it was there and I didn't see it.

reply

So, can only Jim make additions or are there several people who could do so?

reply

It's all Jim. That said, MovieChat's board generation/modification are automated processes triggered from IMDb. He has been responsive in chasing down any discrepancies that may arise.

reply

MERRY CHRISTMAS...HOPE YOU AND YOURS ARE WELL.πŸŽ„

reply

Thank you! Wishing a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year to you and your family.

reply

Dear Mod5,
New Idea (for me anyway).
Replace Ignore with a Red Flag button.
People on my Red Flag list would then appear with an icon, or perhaps appear with a coloured name (guess it can't be red).
This would make them easier to ignore but allow me to see the thread and respond to other posters.

reply

Thanks for the suggestion. The current "Ignore" function is definitely not optimal.

reply

What if, God forbid, something happens to Jim? And can you kindly call to his attention the discrepancies with the many versions of A Christmas Carol, please? Thank you.

reply

The titles that automatically appear when typing in the search bar seem to include a broader set of results. With respect to your example, it includes "The Muppet Christmas Carol" and "A Nashville Christmas Carol", whereas the results that appear after clicking "See more results..." only include the six films titled "A Christmas Carol".

reply

My point about films of A Christmas Carol seems to be getting lost. It is that any versions before 1935 and many versions since are missing from MovieChat.org. Just consult the film and television list here

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adaptations_of_A_Christmas_Carol

many if not all of which are on IMDb (with the exception of the 1901 film version which is not listed on either site) and if you can find the following here a gold star to you, please let me know where they can be found! The specific versions on which I wanted to comment are:

1910 by Edison with Marc McDermott as Scrooge
1913 Scrooge or Old Scrooge with Seymour Hicks as Scrooge
1923 with Russell Thorndike as Scrooge
1949 TV version with Vincent Price narrating and Taylor Holmes as Scrooge
1954 TV version from Shower of Stars (found the program but not that episode) with Frederic March as Scrooge
2012 version with Vincent Fegan as Scrooge

There are plenty of others, these are just the ones available on YouTube or streaming not found here I have watched so far this year. If you simply count the versions in the article and those listed here without comparing each one, it is abundantly clear just by the number how many are missing! Please let me know if this can be remedied. Thank you very much.

reply

They are here but are not appearing in the search results. I will let Jim know about this issue. In the interim, here are the links to the discussion boards for these productions:

2012 version with Vincent Fegan as Scrooge

Hope this helps.

reply

Wow, thanks!

Another one not showing up is the Oscar-winning 1971 animated version.

reply

Thanks.

reply

Mickey's Christmas Carol from 1983 is also not showing up.

reply

This one?
https://moviechat.org/tt0085936/Mickeys-Christmas-Carol

Sometimes you have to select See More Results... from the dropdown menu.

reply

Thanks, I found that usually yielded less results.

reply

Respectfully, what do you get out of watching all of these different versions of A Christmas Carol? Are you an A Christmas Carol scholar? Just curious

reply

On A Christmas Carol kick this year and enjoying it very much.

reply

Do you have a top 3 to recommend?

reply

Of those seen this year, the musical Scrooge from 1970, The Muppet Christmas Carol from 1992, and possibly the 1971 Oscar-winning animated version with the involvement of the wonderful Chuck Jones. Best singing and dancing goes to the 1954 TV version from Shower of Stars, that is even taking into account the wonderful singing and dancing in Scrooge with its huge production numbers.

reply

Then nobody will be paying the servers and the domain name and moviechat will be gone in most probably less than one year.

We really owe Jim for this site.

reply

We do owe him, but we provide the site content. Shouldn't he appoint a second (third, etc.) in command and at least make provisions for the site in his will?

reply

Besides emailing the contact address and Jim personally, I posted on their Facebook page and the post was promptly removed.

reply

LOL. Had no idea this site had a FB
