Watership Down (1978)
A Perfect World (1993)

reply

A Perfect World is really under appreciated. I'm not a huge Costner fan, but I really like that movie.

reply

100% same here. I can’t really even think of another movie that I like a lot that he’s been in. Somehow he really got it right in A Perfect World for me though.

reply

Watership Down is one of my most favorite stories, I've read that book 4 times and I'll read it again and again until El-ahrairah pops in for a final drink with me

It's one of the best stories of freindship ever written, it's up there with Sam Gamgee and Frodo in terms of guys staying true to the bond of loyalty

reply

I’ve never read the book but that VHS was in the stack when I was a kid and I really did watch it a lot. Whenever Hazel lays down in the end I loose it.

When I was young I somehow knew Hazel’s voice was the guy who had the Alien jump out of his chest while eating spaghetti, but incorrectly I thought Big Wig was John Wayne. 😀

I watched Plague Dogs (1982) recently but it just doesn’t hit as hard.

reply

Wow, I never knew John Hurt voiced Hazel, now I feel stupid lol😁!

Adams' high point was Watership, I read The Plague Dogs and Shardik and didn't think much of them, they were just OK stories and good enough

Watership Down on the other hand I would place on the mantle with Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn in terms of characters and conflict and gaining wisdom

Man do I love that book!
I put Watership Down on the same level as The Lord Of The Rings... It's astounding literature and stays with you forever

reply

YES!....A PERFECT WORLD IS HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE EASTWOOD OR COSTNER FILM...SO GREAT....SO SAD.

reply

never been able to finish grave of the fireflies. i think i've tried three or four times over the years. not sure i've ever gotten past the first 20 or so minutes.

reply

I forgot about that one. I’ve just seen it for the first time in the past year or so. It really is a tear jerker.

reply

Oh...I forgot this one too. The whole movie is like a gut punch.

reply

The first ten minutes of Saving Private Ryan. To watch guys get slaughtered on the beach made me think of all the young men who went to war in search of glory but died on battlefields all over the world.

reply

So, so many.

Fly Away Home has made me cry. I agree with the animals, especially if one dies. Then I'm a blubbering mess. My Girl was not pretty for me. I saw it in the theatre, and yeah, I cried so much.

Steel Magnolias
UP
Sound of Metal
Inside Out
Moulin Rouge
Dead Poets Society

I'm sure I could come up with many, many more. I cry at movies so I don't have to cry at real life.

Edit
Totally forgot about Fried Green Tomatoes

Old Yeller seems to be the gold standard for making grown men cry

Not me though, I'm super macho💪

reply

I watched Old Yeller once as a child. I refuse to watch it again.

reply

I've never seen it...I think I'll check it out. Seems a bit sappy though.

Mary and Max

i watched that last week for the first time. very sad & powerful.

reply

I haven't seen it in a long time, but I didn't think a stop-motion animated film would dig in so deep. The dvd has an alternate ending that I liked better, but Adam Elliot decided it was a little too dark.

Have you tried How to with John Wilson yet? The 2nd season is airing now.
