Tell Something unusual about yourself.

I had to wear an eye patch for a lazy eye as a kid. Spoiler, they later learned that eye patches do not correct lazy eye.

I used to be an altar boy and I wasn't molested by a priest.

for about 2 years, i was completely obsessed with ants. i read books about them, kept farms, tried to start a colony by trapping queens (never got one going, tragically), things like that.

i'm not as obsessed now, but i still think they're neat.

reply

What is the best book you read about ants?

reply

i would probably say 'journey to the ants' by eo wilson & bert holldobler is probably my favourite. it's full of great writing and great stories, not technical at all. it's a model of great, approachable science writing imo.

i also really like mark moffat's 'adventures among ants,' more so for its great photography.

Thanks for the recommendations. Which do you think cover ant society the best? I'm mostly interested in their natural social order but I'm sure to pick up Journey of the Ants, it sounds like a lot of fun.

reply

journey to the ants i think would do a very good job of covering that topic.

there is also a book called the lives of ants by laurent keller & elisabeth gordon that is a really great primer on ants, how they function, how they communicate, how they travel. as an entry into that world, it might be better because it takes on so many topics.

the reason i might give the nudge to wilson & holldobler's book is because it's better written, whereas keller & gordon's book is maybe a little clunky. as a front to back read, it isn't quite so graceful. but it's full of interesting facts and stories that you'll want to annoyingly share with anyone who's within earshot.

journey to the ants is also full of great pictures & illustrations.

if money's not an issue, and you're really interested, i'd say buy them both, & probably read the lives of ants first, and then go to journey to the ants as the dessert.

I've got both of them on order. Thank you for the insights into these. I'm sure they'll be great.

I have Synesthesia.

reply

what is that?

reply

In my case when I hear sound (especially music), I see shapes and colours.

reply

what do you see if you are listening to hey jude?

reply

Green and blue spheres (I just gave it a listen).

reply

do you get the same image every time you listen to it?

reply

So, depending on how a song is structured, arranged, performed and produced will determine the shapes and the colours. If I listen to the same piece of music, I will see virtually the same thing twice.

reply

That's really interesting. I've never heard of this before.

reply

Is that where you can see sound?

reply

Yes, I see shapes and colours.

reply

Interesting. I have a friend who has it. What shapes and colours do you see specifically? Do certain sounds always look the same?

reply

The more complex the sound, the more complex the shape. The colours are right across the spectrum but somehow match the mood of what I’m listening to.

Interestingly, I have a degree in music.

reply

Funnily enough, so does my friend. He plays a bunch of instruments, produces music and scores short films for friends as well. What sound is the most beautiful?

reply

Classical music, especially Vaughn Williams and Beethoven.

reply

As a Beethoven fan, I can respect that.

Wow thats impressive. I'd cry if I didn't have Turbo tax. This will be my first year filing divorced, so that should be an adventure. Turbo tax can handle it.
